Guest guest
Hi all,When I went to have my PFT's a couple of weeks ago I was measured for my height. I have always been 5' 8 1/2". This time though I was 5' 7''. I insisted it must be incorrect so they did it twice (no socks or shoes). I AM now 5' 7". Only thing I could think of was the 3 yrs of prednisone...Blessings,Becky Sick sense of humor? Visit Yahoo! TV's Comedy with an Edge to see what's on, when. Guest guest
Becky, when was the last time you were measured? Loss of height in all of us is common as we age & our spinal column flattens out a bit. But if this is a fairly rapid loss in height, like a year or so, you need as assessment of your spine & bone density. When did you last get a bone density scan? Are you on any supplements to prevent or reverse bone loss? Ramblin' Rose Moderator A merry heart is good medicine. Guest guest
I think I can relate to the loss of height... Having been Dx'd with Neuro-sarcoid in Dec 1995, I was treated with Prednisone for 4.5 yrs (among other drugs). Once off the Prednisone, I was then treated with Fosamax (Elandronate) for low none density (officially osteoporisis), and have had bone density scans every two (2) years. Despite my Bone Density increasing gradually since October 1999 it seems I have 'shrunk' 2 inches. For a guy who never exceeded 5'2 " , I reaaly can't afford too lose much more. My Rheumatologist has told me he is no longer immediately wooried about my bone density, but that I should continue watching over my bones. Best regards to all... ...hope everyone is enjoying their summers Mike > > Hi all, > When I went to have my PFT's a couple of weeks ago I was measured for my height. I have always been 5' 8 1/2 " . Guest guest
Hi Rose,First of all, thanks so much for your reply. My last actual measurement was about 4 yrs ago (before steroids). This recent measurement was a couple of weeks ago prior to my PFT's. Evidently, they need height and weight to measure out comparison of normal/abnormal lung volume, etc. My vit D is low at 17.3 now but 3 of my doctors have told me with sarocidosis I have to be really careful about D supplementation. My endocrinologist wanted me to take 50,000 IU every 3 weeks but my rheum said absolutely not and my s Hopkins doctor said not enough is known about vit D supplementation and the effects on sarcoidosis disease activity...he recommended no extra vit D. My calcium is low at 8 something but that was a first. I am too large for the bone density table (thank you prednisone!) so can't do that test. Guest guest
Hi Mike,Thank you for this info. I guess I have to look at it this way: if I hadn't taken the prednisone I wouldn't be here. DARNED if I do and DARNED if I don't kind of thing.Blessings,Beckymichealscott86 wrote: I think I can relate to the loss of height... Guest guest
Becky, there are some sarc patients, but not most of us, who accumulate too much calcium in our systems. This can be determinded by blood & urine calcium levels. Dr.Baughman had me tested before encoraging me to continue the Calcium I had already started. I know that we've referenced a really good article on this before; I'll see if I can find it. BTW, I may not be at the chat today. With my San Diego cousin here, we are trying to get her around to see everybody. We are getting together with some family after church. If we return home in time, I'll see you in the chat room!!
