Guest guest
Hi all, I was wondering, I remember in orientation that we are supposed to be on some type of birth control prior to sx and post-op. Does anyone know what kind? I thought that we could either have the IUD or a pill without progesterone. I might be wrong. Thanks, Maridiana
Guest guest
I had a tubal ligation, years before the surgery so this wasnt an issue for me. But I think the depo is the preferred choice, but I could be mistaken. Anyone else have better info? Guest guest
Like so much else, it really depends on your own medical condition(s). My OB/GYN (Dr. Young, at Santa Clara) told me that I'm not a good candidate for Depo or any other chemical method due to my blood presssure and other conditions. Right now I'm " amennorheic " (sp?) - no periods without Provera - but I'm not menopausal; the tests keep coming back negative on that. Since I do NOT want to hit 50, lose weight, and THEN discover that I'm suddenly fertile again, her recommendation for me was to have an IUD inserted before I begin really working on my weight loss. She has a good familiarity with the WLS program, too; currently she said she has three women she's seeing who are pregnant and who have previously gone thru WLS! I've used almost all the methods of birth control out there at one point or another, but never had an IUD. My personal favorite form of birth control isn't available any more - I had a Norplant for five years, and loved it, but apparently the quality control was not stable enough to make it really reliable. Guest guest
I would recommend avoiding any of the birth control methods that involve systemic use of hormones, including depo, birth control pills, Norplant, the patch, anything that requires the hormones to go throughout the whole body. Part of the problem is that systemic hormones frequently cause weight gain. Another part of the problem is that as hormones which have been stored by the body in fat are released, they can cause all sorts of changes in the blood levels. The most commonly used non-barrier methods (meaning not diaphram or condom) I can think of offhand are the IUD or the NuvaRing. I have heard a lot of people being very pleased with either of those two options, but of course ANY method has its pluses and minuses, its successes and failures. Personally I've had the Mirena IUD since before my surgery, and am quite satisfied with it. Check with a good gynecologist or nurse practitioner to help determine which is best for you. Make sure he/she knows you have either lost a lot of weight, or will be doing so soon, as that WILL probably totally mess up your hormones! Guest guest
Dear Maridiana: They did mention that they do not want us taking estrogen before surgery. So I switched my method to the IUD. Guest guest
Yes they need you to switch to the estrogen free " PILL " method if that is what you choose. I switched back in july to get use to them, they are way different then the others. they are just as effective but I'm not regular any longer and I don't have the classic symtons like I use to when it was that time of the month(ie. tender breasts, lower back pain, tired, bloated) I noticed I have nothing any longer and since it's so irregular I never know when it's going to hit, or there is spotting. World of difference, but my Dr. said that you should switch to the estrogen free kind if you are on high blood pressure meds.. so that was the main reason for doing it.
