Keeping DBB on a toddler

My son is 26 months old, and has been in the DBB and shoes

since about 9 weeks of age. We haven't had any real problems with the

shoes and bars...until now. This pair of Markell shoes that we have

are not the 'improved' shoe with the additional padding/heal counter.

The orthotic supplier that our insurance company has us using never

seems to have the plastizote (sp) insert, and either gives us nothing

at all to put in there or a totally different insert. This wasn't a

problem with the last pair of shoes as we were given the new design,

but for some reason, this time around, we were given the older

version. Every single day now, our son pulls at least one foot out of

the shoes when we go to get him in the morning. Some days, he pulls

BOTH feet out and tosses the shoes out of his crib. I am not even

sure if maybe he is doing this earlier in the evening. He has

bilateral clubfoot, but has one foot that is slightly smaller than the

other, and that is the foot that he can ALWAYS get out of the shoes.

We have the strap on the tightest setting, and we have the laces tied

as tight as we can get them, and he still escapes. I am not sure if

we should just go back to the older, smaller shoes for now or if I

should pay out of pocket for a new pair with the additional padding

from another retailer. Any suggestions from parents with older

children in the DBB and shoes. I am going to contact Dr. Herzenberg's

office, but I thought I would also try asking here. Thank you very much.

Jo Anne,

I would suggest putting him back in his old shoes until you get this

resolved. The orthotic companies are infamous for this -- they will

try to give you their old stock everytime unless you insist on new

ones. I would either go back to the orthotics shop armed with the

info on the new markells and tell them you want new ones ordered

unless they have new ones (in the RIGHT SIZE) in stock or have Dr.

Herzenberg talk to them for you -- either way you are going to

probably have to put your foot down and tell them you want the right

shoes!

Thanks. I am going to try the old shoes. In the meantime, Dr. H's

office is sending something to put in the back of the shoe. I will

also contact the orthotics company about the old stock. Thanks.

Maybe try taking the tongue out (if you use it). I never use the

tongue in my daughter's Markells, you can get the strap much tighter

that way, and it stops her from getting her feet out.

Sure, the quilt sounds like a great idea. Dr. Herzenberg is really a

wonderful, down to earth, physician, and it is nice to do something

special for him. Should I just send to the address below, or would

you like to e-mail me privately with a different address.

Hi Jo Anne.

I think you missed the original post about a month ago. We just felt Dr.

H deserves a quilt and we hope he hangs it in his lobby. We'll see.

Yes. please send the picture to this email address.

Thanks for willing to participate.
