Guest guest
I think the diets tend to be most helpful for children who have an identified type of mito. The most common type/s like the Complexes I-IV are not helped by diet, as both Dr Shoffner and Dr Korson told us. Quite a bit of the children have a FOD (fatty oxidation disorder) in addition to Mito and those are sometimes helped with food restrictions or diets. Being that there are well over 40 known types of Mito, I think its safer to have a specific diagnosis before putting your child on a specific diet. Of course, the only way to get a very specific diagnosis (most usually) is to have a fresh muscle biopsy in Atlanta or Cleaveland. the cornstarch is for kids that can't tolerate an overnight fast. This doesn't neccesarily means they have a known/identified sugar problem...most often mom/dad suspect it generally because of morning behavior and/or appetitie. With us, our mito doc, Dr Korson said that we should try the cornstarch and see if it made a difference and we thought it did, so we kept him on it. I don't remember the measurements per pound but maybe someone else would. deb...mom to four great kids and wife to one amazing guy!www.LifeofLoveProject.orgwww.debwells.com
