Leah's smelly burps

Hi Guys:

Have a question for you. Today when I went to pickup Leah at school

they commented on her very smelly burps. Even one of the kids sitting

next to her said something. Leah had a little reflux this morning

according to my husband after she ate her breakfast. She is fighting a

cold; but nothing major. Her appetite isn't really there, either today.

She passed up snack time at school; then we went to Funset Blvd (an

indoor arcade place) and she barely had one small square of pizza. She

drank a little water and also diluted Pepsi. When she sat on the toilet

to go to the bathroom, she burped and I could smell it. whew. So

wondering what this could mean. Anything at all? I'll keep an eye on

her eating and drinking because that is sending a little warning signal

to me. Thanks.

P.S. We went to the next phase of her development and we will be

getting an electric/manual wheelchair come May. Electric for school and

manual for our home and summer place. Can't believe we are at that next

step of her life.

Different smells can mean different things. If the burps smell like vomit, I'd

bet

that your DD was refluxing. Sweet smells can be a sign of diabetes. What did

it smell like?

Hi :

It just smells like the food she had eaten. So I guess may be vomit. I

took her to her doctor and he put her on Zantac for reflux. He didn't

even question anything. He asked the same question about did it smell

like vomit. I guess I didn't feel it smelled like vomit because that is

such an awful smell. But it sure wasn't sweet smelling. Anyway, he

wants a call in after being on it for 48 hours, then once a week, and

then a followup in a month. I love the way he is on top of things with

Leah. Last night she slept through the night so I believe it is already

helping her. Will know from school if she does any refluxing there.

Thanks for the input.

They most likely won't be able to tell at school if Leah is refluxing. I would

check her closely to see if the Zantac is helping. Our took it as an

infant.

I did not like it because it has 4 time a day dosing. It does not last long so

you

need to take it often. There are meds that require one time a day dosing in

adults. Kids often do better with twice a day dosing (prilosec, previcid,

nexium,

protonix, etc).

An EGD to check for esophageal erosions or a pH probe to check for reflux

may be in order.

Hi :

We only do the Zantac twice a day. Once in the morning and once in the

evening. I believe they watch Leah closely at school because they will

comment every now and then about her spitting up. So that could be

major reflux happening. So far she is back to sleeping soundly at

night. No coughing in the middle of the night and fussing. But our ped

is watching it closely in the way he wants reports weekly on her and

then a followup in a month. But I will be questioning if she should

have any testing done to confirm it all. Will keep your email or print

it out so I have the information you suggested so I don't forget to aske

about a certain doctor doing the test. Thanks for the input. Now we

are doing this, this is a whole new medical area for me, (my

husband) and Leah. What else should we be looking for in reflux? As I

said, this is all so new to me.
