Guest guest
Hello...I am here seeking advice. I have been seeing a neurologist for several years..usually once a year. I've never clicked with this physician and his practice is on the opposite side of town. I usually see him in July, but I had the shingles and I (not surprising at all) spaced getting an appt. I've been really dizzy and am very concern about my memory. Anyway I wanted to transfer to a physician who my husband was seeing when he died and is much closer to where I live. My PC makes me come in to "talk" about the neuro referral. Now, my insurance does not require a referral but the new neuo dr does. I thought it was strange that my PC wanted to see me ... when I went in to the PC she told me the neuro I was seeing had send a progress note that said he had done all he could for me!!! Sounded like a good reason to see someone else to me! I have never been diagnosed with NS..but I have with multi system sarcoid. The PC is making me wait a week and come back in to talk again. I told my Rheumatologist asked me today what neuro was following me and I told him what the notes said. He thinks I need to be seeing someone too. I know many of you deal with the memory loss. I have read about some of you taking "neuophysic" testing and training. Can you tell me about the testing / training ? - sorry I know I am murdering the spelling. My memory is becoming worse all the time. I thought if I went into my PC with some information maybe she would be willing to give me the referral. Thanks for your time.TTFNRuth
Guest guest
Ruth, my first reaction was why does this neuro require a referral even tho your insurance does not? Maybe I'm just paranoid after all these years--what's the old Simon & Garfunkel song? "Still crazy after all these years?" More crazy, actually. Anyway, one visit to your PCP should have been enough; why on earth do you need to talk about it twice? Neuropsych testing involves a variety of tasks/activities to test the cognitive functions of your brain. For many, it's been very helpful in convincing docs (and disability people) of sarc damage to the brain. For me, not so much. If you haven't already, start listing all the times & ways your memory fails. For instance, forgetting to call the doctor when you had shingles is a big one. Guest guest
Ruth, I don’t get on her very often, but after reading your post I was compelled to do so, I have a terrible time with memory loss, confusion, very difficult time in saying the words that are in my mind! I am to be scheduled for neuro testing, but you have to call these places 10 times before someone will actually do something, frustrating and I don’t need anymore of that in my life! I sure hear what you’re saying though! Guest guest
Rose, Some neurologists do want a professional referral, ie. another doctor referring the patient. It has nothing to do with insurance. They just don't want paitents self-referring on what could end up not being a neurological condition. I used to work for a group like this. Guest guest
Thanks for the info, Terri. I just hadn't run into that, back when I had traditional insurance that didn't require a PCP, and now with Medicare. I self-referred to Dr. Stern, Dr. Baughman, my nephrologist, a neurosurgeon when I was considering back surgery, my psychiatrist. Different strokes for different folks, I guess. Guest guest
I may be a little late with this reply--but I hope I can help. I used to do medical billing. If you have to get a paper referral-- read it. Some times they specify number of visits or an experation date. If you just need a doc to verbally refer you to, giving the neuro someone to send notes to--talking to you pcp once should be enough. when in doubt, do what we all HATE, call your insurance co.
