Bar Width

Some of you may have seen our broken bar incident on the clubfoot pics site

this morning. Well the bar snapped in half and I have been to Bath and got a

new bar but she only had a 10 " one while she orders our normal 14 " one. He

is normally set on about 12 " . This new fixed bar is 10 " max. The bolts are

bang on shoulder width but heel to heel they are not. I have always measured

him heel to heel - is this correct or should it be bolt to bolt. I can't

remember now. I am not looking forward to putting these shoes on him in a

minute. He hasn't had a 10 " bar since he was a baby......

Rach-

I don't know what the length difference is with your gold bar as far

as the heel-to-heel versus bolt-to-bolt settings. It might be quite

large because his shoes are big?! They're hopefully close enough

that it won't cause him any discomfort at least for a few nights. I

think the heel-to-heel is usually the best bet for comfort, though

some people use bolt-to-bolt....probably anywhere in between the two

will work as long as the child is comfortable and can't pull his

feet out. Did you talk to the orthotist about maybe ordering you

the red adjustable bar instead of the fixed length gold bars? We

had the red bar, and to me, it was so much nicer having the option

to adjust the length instead of worrying about the baby outgrowing

it...plus I don't think I'd like the ends of the bar sticking out on

the gold one- but maybe the ease of attaching/detaching the shoes on

the gold bar makes up for those shortcomings! I guess it's all in

what you're used to!

I hope he doesn't mind the smaller bar and I hope you get your

replacement quickly!

Oh, and I remember that one family took their smaller bar and had an

extension piece welded into the center of it once....maybe you have

a manufacturing business or automobile repair shop nearby that could

do that for you?!

Regards,

Rach,

I think this sounds like a great idea, either that or weld a piece of

the old bar to the middle, but you could make it adjustable yourself

with the bolt idea. As long as you cover it with padding afterwards.

I just hate how the orthotists will argue with the parents, like we

don't know what we are talking about.
