Guest guest
Tamara, I know that the large calf muscles go hand in hand with Duchenne's Muscular Dystrophies and some other muscular dystrophies. I had not heard about it in mito. If you go to the MDA web page and look up calf muscles, I think you'd be likely to find out about it b/c I know it's a pretty prominent feature in kdis with Duchenne's Muscular Dystrophy. I do not know what it means for kids with mito, except that it tends to happen when the other muscles are getting weak and the calf muscles are trying to compensate. Wish I knew that there were some answers to help. HTH, Anne R
Guest guest
Hi Tamara, My son, J.D., has mito and has large calf muscles. It is from the muscle spasms. Since he " looks " muscular, people think he is strong; however, is has very little energy. When he first look pt years ago, before his diagnosis, they just thought he had to build up energy but the pt actually made the mito worse. He gets ultra sound therapy on his legs and according to Dr. Whiteman, this helps mito kids. If a dr writes the order, the therapist has to follow it. We at first ran into therapist that didn't understand mito but had to follow dr's prescription. Most mito kids had low muscle tone but large calf muscles can be mito related. Hope this helps.
