Guest guest
Asenath has the same problem. We have especially noticed the issue to become worse after her cognitive strokes. She will say something several times and until we repeat " Exactly " what she wants to hear word for word, she will keep repeating it and get very frustrated. The last cog. hit also caused a lot of anger and emotional outbursts so this issue has been much worse because she gets so upset if we don't quickly respond to her. Our therapists do repeat what she says often and it seems to help so we have learned to really listen when she speaks and then repeat back what she says or say the answer to her question with several of the same words she uses in her question so she doesn't get riled up. For Asenath I think it is partially an issue with processing and recall/memory problem. She also obsesses over certain things when not doing as well. For a while everything was about necklaces for instance and if you didn't let her see or wear a certain necklace she would lose it. This can really be a frustrating issue for sure. This is actually an issue I was planning on bringing up with the group as she has gotten to the point where she gets so frustrated with things and needs specific responses or she really loses it. For instance, she will have to kiss several times and hug several times when I or others leave and we have to allow her how many times she wants or look out. And lately we have even saw temper tantrums (which has NOT been her pattern most of her life other than surrounding stroke episodes) and she was even rocking and banging her head the other day when she couldn't have her sister near her. Autistic behaviors also a possibility I know, but could be many things... I say, " Ok honey. Let's talkabout something else. " > Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't. Any ideas? I don't know what all it means but my little (age 3) is doing this same thing. What we have found works is to repeat the phrase back to him, and sometimes that helps the " skipping record " . The other thing is we have found some of Will's phrases are supposed to have a specific response or Will continues to repeat it until you give him the right line back. Example of this is he'll say " phew " over and over again until you tell him " that was a close one " and then he says the whole phrase back to you and can move on. This is definitely getting worse around here and our Speech therapist isn't too sure what to make of it either. Sorry I don't have any info on the why side of this, but we are dealing with it too Hope that helps some, J Colo
