Guest guest
Does water hurt regardless of temperature? Is it just cold water? Does cold broth (soup) hurt? How about hot? How about tea or coffee? Even with a regular tummy there has been times when cold water hurt me. I found that I had to let it sit out awhile and drink it room temp. Guest guest
Pam - Happy re-birth. =) Hope your recovery finishes uneventfully. Regarding water -- I could not drink it -- it was too heavy for my new tummy. Many folks can, and I know several who couldn't. I drank Diet Iced Botanicals from Sam's, popsicles (real ones - not the chemically SF kind), made sno cones with my hawaiian ice machine. I could eat the shaved ice okay -- but for some reason - the water was just too heavy. I also found (and continue) that mainly Diet Pepsi poured over ice goes down best. Every once in awhile I'll try water again -- and I was never a big water drinker, but would like to be someday, since its best for us -- but it just still isn't working for me. Glad the doc is having you watch your temp to make sure it doesn't get too high. I had a low grade fever in the hospital, but don't remember having one at home, until 6 weeks out when I got pneumonia. One thing I found, though, was that Bactrim did not work as an antibiotic, due to the malabsorption. I think, but am not sure, that because of where it is absorbed, that it is not a good antibiotic for us DSers to take -- you may want to double check with your doc, maybe it just works that way for me and some of the others. There was another antibiotic that didn't work for me, either -- Biaxin. Just wanted to share this with you, just in case. Hope you're feeling 100% real soon. This is, by far, the | CRAZIEST thing I've ever experienced!! It is miserable!! I asked my doc | about it at my two week post-op visit, and he told me that there were some | things that they just could not explain. NOT a satisfactory answer!!! | Well, here I am, four weeks and one day post-op, getting ready to go back | later today for my 4-week post-op check, and I'm STILL experiencing this. | Can anyone tell me what this is, or WHY it is happening? It doesn't last | very long (thank GOD!!) but it is VERY painful when it is happening. I'm | 99.9% sure that it isn't any sort of gas, because I've experienced the gas | pains, and this is different. I also feel it when I eat certain foods. The | best way to explain it is that it feels like I've swalled a GIANT block, and | it's going down with all the sharp edges poking me. DANG!!! | | The other question I had was did any of you have a low-grade fever when you | came home? I've been running a low grade fever (it ranges usually between | 99.3 - 99.6) and it doesn't seem to want to go away. The doctor told me that | he wasn't concerned about it, as long as it stays below 101. He also told me | that I probably had a urinary tract infection because of the catheter, and he | gave me some Bactrim to take. He DID say that I could possibly still have | the low grade fever for a while even AFTER finishing the course of the | BACTRIM treatment, but that just seems strange to me. Of course, I will ask | him again today about it, but I thought I'd throw that out there to you guys | and see what you have to say. | | Please forgive me if these are topics that you've recently been discussing. | I just CAN'T seem to get on this computer lately. In about two weeks from | now, things should return to normal around here (whatever THAT is!! LOL!!) | and I'll be planting myself in front of this computer a little bit more. | | I'm looking forward to hearing from you!! | | Hugs, | | | Pam in MD | BPD/DS - July 9, 2001 | Dr. Vanguri | | |
Guest guest
> First of all, did it ever HURT when you drank water? Yep, feels like you swallowed a basketball, right? But it goes away in say five to fifteen seconds? Perfectly normal. Your stomach is much narrower now than it used to be, (possibly even narrower than your esophagus), but your esophagus is the same diameter as it used to be. You are used to swallowing into a large stomach, and many of us tend to be gulpers. Plus, your stomach is still recovering from MAJOR trauma. Add this all up and if you don't take teeny-tiny sips and/or bites of food, it's gonna hurt. It goes away with time though, so don't worry about it. > The other question I had was did any of you > have a low-grade fever when you came home? > I've been running a low grade fever (it ranges > usually between 99.3 - 99.6) and it doesn't > seem to want to go away. The doctor told me > that he wasn't concerned about it, as long > as it stays below 101. Don't worry about it if your doc isn't worried. I wouldn't even call what you've got a fever. You could probably raise your temperature that much by walking uphill on a warm day or wearing clothes that are too warm. Guest guest
Pam- It hurt when I drank water, too- room temp was less painful than cold or cool. It just went away on its own, eventually. Not satisfactory, I know.. but I got no answers, either. It was the WORST first thing in the AM, after I'd been empty all night. But it did go away around 5 or 6 weeks. As for the low grade temp- mine has not gone below 99.3 since I got home from the hospital... no one has an explanation.. and I'm curious, because preop, normal for me was ~97.3-96.0. I don't feel warmer or colder, but I have noticed that I have a low grade temp now, always. No one has an explanation... Hope you're feeling good otherwise, hon.. Guest guest
Pam- I don't want to freak you out but I think you should call the doctor's office and tell them you want to be checked again. At about 5 days out I was having alot of pain on swallowing fluids and even very soft foods like applesauce or jello. I was also running a very low-grade fever. I felt kinda crappy in general. Turns out I had an infection at the site when my stomach was connected to my intestines. Dr. Rabkin had me back in the hospital in the ER right away when I told him my symptoms. My fever never went over 100 and my blood work didn't show I had an infection. They only found it after they did the cat scan and they said it was huge. The inflammation from the infection was causing a partial obstruction and that is why I had pain on drinking stuff. Anyhow, Dr. Rabkin told me it was not normal to hurt so bad when drinking. Anyhow your symptoms just sounded vaguely familiar.
