Guest guest
Thanks to everyone, for sharing. I really appreciate the input from everyone. My experience has been very positive, so positive I was just a wee bit suspicious. My 2 ½ year old, Zoe has an underdeveloped cerebellum, left front lobe malformation and myelin damage.,. but thus far has had no seizures that we know of..Developmentally she is delayed as well. Getting her to bed at night, even when she is deliriously tired, exhausted and out of energy, has been tough. She has just seemed “ hardwired” and unable to shut down. Additionally, she has been signing that she is scared and would literally scream when deposited in her crib after elaborate nighttime rituals… The ordeal of getting her to sleep would last 2 , 2 ½ hours and she would always scream and cry at the end. She wakes up at night for milk and upon waking she would sometimes start the cycle again. All of the things I know to try with a typical kid did not work, and she could not even calm down in our bed. I’m sure many of you moms can relate. I have no problem waking 3 or even 4 times a night to give milk, or change a diaper. But the two hours at bed time with the cycle starting again during the night , and the crying and screaming was the worst. Finally I broke down and tried melatonin. She goes off to sleep SO peacefully that I was worried I gave her too much 1.25 mg , or that there must be some catch… okay, so I even feel guilty!! I have restored sanity to my house and it seems too good to be true!! Anyway, Zoe also has some reflux during the night and seems to be congested so I try to give her the reflux meds before bed. I think to be safe I will also do the 24 hour EEG the doc is offering too make sure there is no seizure activity during the night, but the melatonin is a dream. Also, to the mom who quite awhile ago suggested chocolate syrup for administering supplements, THANK YOU> it works just great!! I crush her melatonin add a drop of water, the choc syrup and suck it up with the syringe! Anyway, am always interested in similar stories ,but I just wanted to say thanks and thank you for sharing your experiences. For anyone else out there that has been hesitant about it ( our doc recommended it a long time ago..) I would say do it, it definitely helps! It said that " melatonin enhances inflammation in asthma " . I believe that the most recent articles state that melatonin can help with sleep for asthmatics. We just monitored Lucas and he seemed to do okay with it. He had had frequent bouts of croup in the past prior to melatonin use. The lack of staying asleep and an increased level of discomfort (possible abdominal pain) was what caused us to switch off of melatonin and on to amitriptyline. What has also been uncovered is that Lucas was diagnosed with a fatty acid oxidation disorder most likely long-chain (LCHAD) and a switch to a cheaper formula (not LCHAD friendly) was also taking place at that time.
