We do the tests first, etc. at Mt Sinai because such pre-op stuff is used in the insurance document to obtain approval (i.e. - if GERD/reflux/hiatus hernia is found during the endoscopy, etc.). I'm sure it isn't absolutely necessary when one has other documentation for pre-existing conditions (such as if one has diabetes, high blood pressure, sleep apnea and this has previously been diagnosed). The pre-op requirements (which may differ according to various surgeons) of upper endoscopy, psych consult, bloodwork/endocrine panel (TH series, I think) and nutritional consult were completed before the insurance stuff was submitted. ACtually, that was done last -- and a week before surgery at that! Talk about being nervous! LOL I got the surgery date booked/scheduled right away after my first consult but the approval wasn't submitted until pretty close to my surgery date. Then again, I had things covered by Oxford (Gagner was a participant in the plan at the time). For you, it might be disadvantageous to do all that pre-op work if the insurance is going to fight you on approval... all the best, lap ds with gallbladder removal January 25, 2001
