Guest guest
I went to my initial consultation with Dr. K in Delano (http://www.gr-ds.com) and I was a little apprehensive about the visit. I thought I'd write up what happened in case other people were stressing, too. All in all, it was pleasant, and not that big of a deal. The whole visit lasted about 3 hours. The first half was basically educational. It was a one on one session with Dee Tinkle, RN, Dr. K's patient coordinator. Not only is she teaching 'out of the book' on what will happen before, during, and after, but she herself has been switched, so she knows the real deal. She actually gives you a written quiz at the end of it, so you better pay attention. Dr. K did about 200 switches in his residency in Michigan, and now has performed about 100 switches in Delano (OBTW zero mortality...). Dee was California switch number 3, and Dee's daughter was number 53. So I was reassured that his staff understood about our trials and tribulations, and had first hand experience. The second half was an examination by Dr. K. First they weighed me with my clothes on, barefoot. They have one of those (Tamiya?) body composition analyzer scales that tells your weight, BMI, bodyfat, etc. The physical exam was not super involved, palpitations, listening to body sounds with stethoscope, looking in your mouth and ears, etc. Dr. K. is very intense, but he has a kind heart and good bedside manner. He described the procedure again at length, with particular emphasis on possible complications. He wants to make sure that you do this with full knowledge that there are possible side effects and complications. My wife went with me, and participated. That greatly reassured her. Now I'm waiting for BCBS Federal Employees Program to approve me (keep your finger crossed)... Greg
