Guest guest
My son is 14 months and sleeps in a pack-in-play because the sides are mesh and don't make any noise when he slams his FAB into the side. We are trying to transition into a crib because he is getting so long but he wakes himself up hitting the wood. What does/did everyone one else do? Crib? for how long? Our doctor told us that he has to stay in a crib until he is out of the shoes. He doesn't want him to crawl or fall out of a bed and hurt himself. Did anyone use a bed or toddler bed? Thanks, Stacie
Guest guest
We also had to do the pack and play for the same reasons but Kelsey was no longer comforatble in it. She is now in a toddler bed with a bed rail on it. She does great and she is not far enough from the floor to hurt herself if she " falls " . I know there is no way I could have kept her in a crib or I would not be sleeping at all. Also, she is quite a climber in her brace and it would hurt more falling from a crib that from a toddler bed. We are planning to move her into a twin bed at Christmas and I do not forsee any problems with that. Guest guest
Stacie, I think you need to do what feels right for you and your son. We've always put our daughter in a crib but we don't mind the whacks in the night. And it has gotten much better as she's gotten older. (She's 19 mos now). When my boys were ready to move from the crib to the bed I came across a wonderful solution. Instead of buying a toddler bed I found a low, probably intended to be a trundle bed, set of rails. I bought a bunkie board instead of a full sized box spring - it was MUCH cheaper and I could use it on bunk beds later - and then a good twin mattress that they could use as they grew up. They were close to the floor if they happened to fall out past the rail and it worked for them getting in and out of their beds by themselves. When we built their bunk bed/loft we just used the set of rails for the lower bed and it works out well. I know folks who have put the twin mattress on the floor as a transition as well. Just a thought... Chris crib or bed w/ FAB? My son is 14 months and sleeps in a pack-in-play because the sides are mesh and don't make any noise when he slams his FAB into the side. Guest guest
Hi Stacie, Darbi slept with us till just a few months ago when I put her in her own room in a convertible crip (like a daybed now). She banged into the bars a little bit at first, I got a crib bumper and she hated it. So I took it off. Now, I don't see it as a problem at all. She can get out of her bed if she wants (because it's a daybed now) and it's low enough to the ground that she can't hurt herself. I certainly couldn't imagine a 4yo in a crib, so keeping him in there till he's out of the shoes sounds a bit ridiculous to me. There comes a time where they are big enough to do what they want when they want... and a toddler bed is just fine for a child in the FAB. What use is there to prevent them from getting out of bed anyway? Quite honestly, I don't know a 2yo who wears this brace that would not know exactly how to get out of bed without hurting himself in the first place. Have you seen what these kids can get into and onto and out of in the FAB? I trust her in her FAB more than I do on her feet... She doesn't fall and hit her head on the floor in her FAB while she's done it countless times without it. Bottom line, put him where you think he'll sleep best. If he gets out of bed, how different is that than any other child who gets out of bed? Darbi gets out of MY bed perfectly fine and has for over a year now. Longer even I'm sure. She's 2-1/2yo. If you think toddler bed will work for him, go for it. If you have a crib, give that a try. Banging the brace hasn't kept Darbi awake. But I sure wouldn't keep him in a regular crib through the bracing period. It's simply not right to make a 3 or 4yo sleep in a crib if they aren't interested in it. Plus, what about potty training? Some kids are able to get to the potty just fine with the FAB on. Darbi isn't doing it yet... she calls me to come get her still. But I hear that it usually isn't a problem in the middle of the night. As long as they can get to the bathroom lol! Guest guest
Kelsey is 22 months and has been sleeping in the toddler bed exclusively for about 2 months now. She does very well in the toddler bed and we just got back from vacation where several nights in a hotel she shares a queen bed with her sister with no problems. Guest guest
Our son has been in a car shaped bed for months now (about 8 months) and he is 2 and 5 months- it is bigger than a cot but smaller than a single bed and has a roof. He has been in that for months and he will probably stay in it till he is about 4 I suppose but I am not worried about putting him in a single bed anyway. He does much better in his bed than he did in his cot. In the mornings he gets up and opens all the doors and then shuts them again before he comes in with us. He walks everywhere in his FAB. He can sit on his potty and get off, we haven't really had any issues with any of it considering. He doesn't fall over and hurt himself in his shoes. The only thing he can do in them is geton his ride-on toys !!!!! Rach, Steve & Connor -- crib or bed w/ FAB? Guest guest
Stacey, We moved from his cot to a big travel crib /playpen at 11 months, because he kept on waking up when he banged the rails or got the shoes stuck between them. He slept in that happily until he was 2 and 4 months. He said he was ready to move to his 'big bed' then and he sleeps in a normal bed now, not a toddler bed. We bought a double bed which is nice and wide to accommodate him, the FAB and all his teddies! I used a rail with mesh on that slides in between the mattress and the base to stop him falling off the bed. The one we have is made by Chicco. I can't see how he could stay in the crib until he was 3.5 to 4 years old which is the age that Dr Ponseti now recommends they wear the shoes. Guest guest
We ended up buying a toddler bed, which I do suggest however our problem was we didn't think enough when we bought it. We bought the step 2 fire truck bed and it just wasn't wide enough with a 12 " bar that he had then so it didn't work out. He slept on the floor on the mattress for a while. He just felt safer that way. Then we ended up just buying bunk beds, but he still has to sleep on the bottom bunk. I think there is a photo on our website of when he got his new big boy fire truck bed. He litterly had it in his room for a few months then it went into the attic ever since.
