I am assuming he had no filter---these are inserted in a procedure

much like a cardiac catherization where a catheter is threaded up

through the artery in the groin. The filter is placed in the main

vein going back to the heart from the legs, the route a clot would

take.

The clot goes to the first half of the heart then to the lungs where

if it is big enough it completly stops flow through the heart--so no

blood can get oxygenated.

The filter catches the clot---and over time it breaks down normally.
