Everyone,

I am wondering if anyone knows of any patient education materials or

other resources for Migrant and Seasonal Farmworkers that have been

translated into indigenous languages.

Josh,

I believe the Coordinación Estatal de Attention al Migrante Oaxaqueno, a

state agency in Oaxaca, Mexico was working on some Mixteco translations

several years ago. I don't know what the results are but this is the link to

their web site. http://www.oaxaca.gob.mx/migrante/modulo.htm

Having kept

up with the string of messages on this subject and the apparent void in

information made me look at a greater issue and the opportunities for a touch

of intellectual curiosity.

What an

interesting research project this would be – “The Voices of our Immigrant Communities:

A study to identify the languages, including indigenous languages and dialects,

spoken by patients accessing health care through community health centers

and/or other health care delivery systems.”

Instead of

health care we could also use schools, the criminal justice system, hospitals

and other locales where by virtue of civil rights legislation and federal

guidelines must collect and respond to the needs of these communities. I am going

to pursue this on a small scale basis in collaboration with my wife and the

clinic where she works as I know she is always expressing concern for the need

of patients who speak indigenous languages and their variations.

The value

of such a research project would have multiple applications. In addition to helping

us determine the needs for interpreter services, creating interpreter pools in

local communities, developing educational materials, job opportunities for

individuals with bilingual/multilingual competencies within the immigrant

communities and beyond, and maximizing the resources for all of us to deliver linguistically

and culturally appropriate services are but brief snapshot of critical

opportunities such a research endeavor could generate.

Anyone out

there in our federal agencies or foundations with a bit of jingle in their

purses/pockets willing to consider such a project? Any colleagues in academia

who may willing to work with me crafting a service learning or research project

that could be assigned to students as part of a course? Or is there anyone out

there already doing something related who could educate the rest of us?

Personal

inquiries are always welcomed via my direct e-mail or by phone as noted below.
