BASIC FACILITATION SKILLS FOR SELF-HELP GROUP LEADERS

Wed., January 30, 2008

6:30 pm - 8:30pm

Bloomfield Public Library

The workshop is designed for anyone who is interested in, or has been,

facilitating a self-help group, and would like to fine-tune their skills.

This interactive workshop will cover the following:

Facilitation Skills

· What exactly are the roles and responsibilities of a group

facilitator?

· What special characteristics are needed to be an effective group

leader?

Identify your personal strengths, and develop an improved facilitation style

by learning new facilitation skills.

Membership Issues

· How many members are enough?

· How can you recruit new members?

· How do you encourage newcomers to return to your group?

· How can you get members to help out with the operation of the

group?

These and other membership issues will be discussed.

Keeping Your Group On Track:

· How can you maintain an effective, safe and comfortable meeting?

· Why ground rules?

· How you can get the most out of your group discussions

· How and why you should evaluate your group.

Dealing with Problems

· How do you deal with a person who monopolizes the conversation?

· How can you discourage cross talk?

· How do you deal with conflict in the group?

The workshop will discuss problem solving techniques to help you deal with

difficult behaviors and situations.

Interactive Sharing:

This will be the perfect opportunity for group leaders to discuss common

problems and situations that may occur in your group. Does your membership

dwindle? Is there a particularly difficult person in your group that causes

problems? Has your group experienced and conquered a problem that you can

share with others? You will have the chance to raise special concerns and

share successful experiences with other group facilitators

SELF-HELP SUPPORT GROUP

The workshop is designed for anyone who is interested in starting, or who

has recently started, a self-help group. The workshop is for persons who are

interested in starting, or who have just started, a self-help group. It will

cover:

F Why People Go to Groups: Why do people attend groups? How can your

group meet your member's needs?

F Developing a Vision for Your Group: Learn how to develop a vision /

mission statement for your group.

F Sharing the Workload: Find out how you can develop a " core group " so

that you don't have to do it alone.

F Meeting Site: Explore ideas for finding possible meeting sites for you

group.

F Publicity: Learn how to publicize your group using newspapers, TV, key

agencies, brochures, internet, and many other free resources.

F How to Be a Telephone Contact Person What do you do when people start

calling about your group? Learn ways to be an effective contact person.

F Group Format: Groups come in all varieties. Find out how to develop a

welcoming and safe group format.

F Keeping the Group Going: How do you keep the group going strong? How

can you deal with problems that develop?
