Importance of pylorus/duodenum in nutrient absorption

" ...what is the difference between DS and non-DS? With the

classic BPD (and bypasses) the stomach is sewn directly to

the alimentary limb (no pylorus or duodenum). Food is simply

dumped into the intestine with little or no breakdown as in

the normal stomach. It is not slowly fed into the intestine

at a rate the intestine can process it and get the most out

of it. The mechanisms that transport the nutrients through

the bowel wall and into the blood stream get saturated and

nutrients pass right on by. With a pylorus, food undergoes

normal gastric breakdown and is released to the intestine

at a rate the intestine can handle. Therefore the classic

BPD needs more volume of food to prevent malnutrition.

The pylorus allows for better utilization of nutrients and

virtually eliminates diarrhea caused by intestinal overload

and distention. "

So, you can see that it's not the duodenum alone, but the fact that

food reaches the intestine in a much more absorbable state.

Hope this helps!
