Guest guest
Even though we may not agree with what a person was using before they came into to the Bariatric Program I am sure she will have to stop using the medication and lose the weight the correct way. I know that Kaiser has used medications with patients that are not in the WLS program because I have talked to different people who are not interested in WLS and do get medication to aid in weight loss. We, since have been educated about the ins and outs of using pills know that it is only a crutch and will not lead a to a permanent way of learning to eat a healthy way of course are shocked but I don't think it should get to the point where it becomes such a big issue. I am sure the person has gotten the point with the first couple of messages that normally people who are going through the process do not take medication to aid in weight lose. I do not want this person feel as though she is being attacked because of what she was doing before she was accepted into the program. This is a group for support so please give advice. Thanks Ramona Moderator
Guest guest
My main concern here is that many times things can get blown way out of proportion and a person who is new to our group can easily feel like they are being attacked. We are all concerned about when we hear that one of our group is doing something that we all know is not healthy. I just don't want it to get too out of hand that is all. I too have done everything you mentioned and probably a few more. Sorry if I made you feel like you can't express your concerns I probably should have changed the subject. Everyone is free to express there concerns. I didn't mean for it to come over that way. For me there is nothing worse that feeling like everyone is ganging up on you when all you did is make a comment. Ramona
Guest guest
I'm flabbergasted that Kaiser would perscribe diet pills to any one I was always told to do it the natural way less food more exercise. I have a friend who had her WLS surgery at Mt. Diablo and they gave her diet pills to loose her 10 % this just seems wrong to me because if you need these crutches to loose are you going to need them after surgery mentally. I just really don't know how there are such differences in the Kaiser Wls sites you would think they would all be on the same page. T"seren.dipity2b" wrote: Nursefera--Thank you for your post! Subject: Just Starting) She had 7 replies and no one mentioned the "diet pill" issue yet she was warned not to use the "gummy bear type" multi-vitamin! It just seems wrong to me. Guest guest
Before I even thought of WLS my doc suggested the " Healthy Ways " classes. They did offer 30 days (with 2 refill) of diet pills. Did they work, sure until I stopped taking them. About a year later I started my journey with the reat of you. PEGGY > > > Nursefera--Thank you for your post! Guest guest
Dear Ramona Moderator--I was in no way attacking the person posting. I thought she was currently in the Kaiser WLS program and that was the reason for her posting here. I was just questioning Kaiser's protocal. Believe me I would be the last one to point fingers at what someone has tried before coming to this decision to have life-altering surgery. I have been dieting since I was 12. I am now 52. I have tried every fad diet, had shots of pregnant womens urine (in the 70's), tried acupuncture, hypnosis, Nutri-system, even Phen-Fen. So, no, I don't judge anyone. On the other hand, I should not be made to feel like I cannot express concern about something I read here on the board. We are all here to learn and support and sometimes that means asking questions. >> Even though we may not agree with what a person was using before they came > into to the Bariatric Program I am sure she will have to stop using the > medication and lose the weight the correct way. Guest guest
I don't agree with it either , people need to use the tool (WLS) with the lessons they learn as they lose the 10% so they will be able to make a good journey for the rest of their life. It is weird Kaiser Sacramento is precribing the diet pill, but if they are no matter what we say it's hard for a new person to understand when the doctor is giving it to them and saying it's okay. If this is the case and all plays do things so different then who are we to say don't do this against what the doctor says. This is hard no matter what we believe you want to follow the doctors rules and get the surgery. We know without the diet pill is the best way and learn all you can, just because you have the surgery doesn't teach you what you need to know before the surgery. Just my thoughts. I'm very happy I had to just do it without diet pills and had to lose the 10%, I am so better off for these lessons. Take care. Donna J."seren.dipity2b" wrote: Nursefera--Thank you for your post! Guest guest
FYI - Kaiser prescribes Xenocal for weight loss. It's much safer than Phen-anything, however the side effects can be nasty. I happened to work at Roche, who produces Xenocal and when they did clinical trials. I worked with a man who participated and had explosive diahrrea (sp) for 3 days! He couldn't leave his house. Another participant ate chips with Olestra and had the same nasty reaction - at work! The drug works, however, be prepared to 1) wear diapers, 2) stay home for the first week or two, or 3) have a rather embarrassing accident at work!! in Cupertino
Guest guest
I'm one of the people who answered 's post, and didn't mention the Phentermine in my answer. Why? hasn't had orientation yet. If someone who's been through Orientation said they were using the pills, I'd have a problem with it. However, it's no surprise that she would mention diet meds as part of her history - lots of us have used them in the past. In fact, one of the questions they ask about when you are referred for WLS is about your previous history of weight loss efforts. Yes, Kaiser does prescribe weight loss pills. When I was referred, they used all my previous attempts at weight loss through Kaiser Santa Clara (including Fen-Phen and Weight Loss Management classes) as part of my documentation that showed a need for the WLS program.
