Guest guest
Hello! And thank for everyone's help when I ask if Tachycardia was common in Mito kids. Joey has been on his Event monitor for one week now. We have caught 4 episodes. 2 @ 158, 1 @ 159 and 1 @ 160. My nurse at school said that sounded pretty high. Does any one know what the levels are for determining Tachycardia? Does his sound high? Thanks Tamara
Guest guest
Hi Tamara, Determining if a heart rate is tachycardia depends on several factors: 1) the age of the child and 2) the activity level (what was the child doing) at the time and 3) the rhythm during the rate. If the child was at rest, those values are high. If the child is running, playing, excited, those rates may be considered normal. Another factor they consider is the medications the child is taking. Some medications slow the heart rate, if the child is taking one of those medications and the rate is somewhat rapid, at rest, it may be abnormal. Knowing what the rhythm was is almost as important as knowing the rate. A rate of 150 may be normal with activity is the rhythm is something called sinus. It would be abnormal if the rate was 150 and the rhythm was SVT or VT. In other words, you don't have enough information to know for certain if those rates were normal or abnormal. Guest guest
Im not sure of the normals for a child, as i know they can be a little higher than for adults... at 10 I had a resting heart rate of 120, and was told that was quite high... (considered tachycardic). sorry i dont have much input, but i would suspect those numbers would be considered tachycardia... > > Hello! Guest guest
I'm not sure but it sounds high. When Sheldon is dehydrated in the hospital, his is usually that high. He's 3. Hello! Guest guest
Asenath regularly runs at that rate and has been for several years. Because she doesn't have any signs of heart failure or issues, the docs haven't made a big deal out of it. Her already being so high normally is why when ill she shoots up to 200+ and really worries me. Hope your case is the same. Nothing to worry about that is... Guest guest
Grace commonly will average a heart rate in the 150-160's. She will easily go into the 200-220's when stressed. Everybody seems to comment on it, but her cardiologist is not concerned. She has had normal echo's so we just pass it off as another autonomic thing. Hope this is the same for your situation. Guest guest
Hi Tamara: I think the most important question when it comes to tachycardia is how long the high heart rate is sustained. It is common for the heart rate to go up with activity, or fever, etc. but if it lasts for an extended period of time then it would be considered tachycardia. I think what they will look for on the event monitors are any sustained periods with a high heart rate. My son Jonah does have dilated cardiomyopathy and runs high much of the time. When he wears an event monitor we have seen it go up to 250 plus when walking up hill, etc. But as long as it is tied into the activity and not showing up during sleep, rest etc... I don't think the cardiologists get too concerned about it. Hope this helps a bit. Good luck with the event recorder. Jonah is not usually too happy when he has to wear them for an extended period of time. Hope all goes well. Diane Jonah 9years Complex 4, dilated cardiomyopathy Kiah 11 years Healthy!! Guest guest
Tamara I believe a tachy is anything over 160 vs a brady which is anyhting below 60 rosy
