Hey Kim,

I don't have much of an explanation, but Maddie's hands and feet are frequently freezing. I've always summed it up to poor circulation and no body fat. She doesn't complain about it either. It's funny, though- on occasion her hands will be extremely warm, almost feverish, while the rest of her body is normal. Because she doesn't complain about it, I've not given it much thought, other than it goes along with all of her other unanswered symptoms!

very cold hands

Dear group members, I am wondering if any of you can shed some light on what my daughter is experiencing. Nichole is 10 and has NARP mito with the T8993G mutation. She has always had cool hands, but the last few weeks they have turned ice cold. They are so cold that others do not like to have her touch them. She doesn't complain about them and even though her communication skills are very limited, she does not seem uncomfortable. Have any of your children experienced this and could you explain to me what might be happening with her system regarding the cold hands. Thanks,KimPlease contact mito-owner with any problems or questions.

Kim,

Cold hands and feet can be a sign of autonomic dysfunction, the inability of the body to regulate body temp/circulation. Chelsea often has cold hands and feet, it does not seem to bother her, but it does me. I try not to worry unless they are purple or bluish. This is always worse after a seizure, and there will be a line about mid thigh where she goes from cold to warm. When she is ill or cutting teeth, her cheeks and chin will get flame red and feel hot to the touch, while the rest of her is fine. She usually does not run a fever when ill, unless very ill, but often runs a low grade temp while teething.

Cold hands and feet can also be a sx of neuropathy. A burning or tingling sensation with loss of feeling also usually goes along with this.

I am not sure if autonomic dysfunction can cause neuropathy. I guess it would be possible, since the AD can inhibit blood flow, and therefore O2, which will cause nerve damage.
