Guest guest
There is a really good book that may be of some help to you called The Out Of Synch Child by Carol Kranowitz. What youre describing sounds exactly like my son when he was younger. One of the first things the neuropsychologist told me at our initial appointment was "He doesn't seem to learn from past experiences does he." I told her she must have hidden cameras at my house!! She assured me it wasn't as much a behavior thing ( I had a pediatrician tell me he was ADHD and needed more discipline and Ritalin!) as it was/is a sensory issue. It is the way he learns things and at the rate at which he learns things is dictated by what senses he uses to process the incoming information, ex: visual, auditory, tactile, etc. This would definitely something that scholl would be concerned with. For my son it is one thing for the teacher to tell him something (auditory) but it is not concrete in his mind unless he has it presented to him so that he can read it (visual). So, in other words he uses two senses to process something whereas the rest of the class may only need oral instruction. My son was diagnosed at 4 1/2 with Asperger's, mild ADD, and all that goes with it. The core issue we started working on was Sensory Integration Dysfunction. The book by Carol Kronowitz adresses SI Dysfunction. Having said all that, please don't think I'm trying to diagnose your kiddo. Just trying to share some of what I have learned. Steph-mom to- Seth and Sydnie both with mito Complex I & IVsarah wrote: I find a lot of safety issues w/ my son and throwing himself and i understand some of that is normal kid stuff but i swear he doesnt seem to have a sense sometimes of if he throws himself and hurts himself, i feel i always have to have a hold of him somewhere when we're out in public to make sure he doesnt get hit by a car or fall. He does things that are very odd to me and I just dont know what to make of it am i just reading too much into this? i do know they have said hes delayed socially. He just repetitively touches all the record buttons. If u tell him not to touch something he still repetively does it even if repremanded . Its just very frustrating one of the reasons I am not ready to mainstream him. Although people think i should I dont know maybe i'm just being too sensitive? I never had this w/ my daughter. She knew at 3 to look for cars and danger. Is this to be a concern for school? Do you Yahoo!?Yahoo! Mail - now with 250MB free storage. Learn more. Guest guest
I noticed another mom posting about Sensory Integration Disorders, and also think this is something you should investigate further. With SID a child can either be turned off by a sensation or require overloads of it, regardless if it is painfull or not. He may have something uncomfortable overloading his senses, so he tries to "hide" it with pain. We took Grace to an OT to help with this. We used the brushing technique and it really worked well. Actually Grace just got released from weekly OT last week, and we are only on 2 month recalls now. (Still have to go to same place for Speech every week though ) Other options to consider would be Autistic Spectrum Disorders, Aspergers Syndrome or even ADD/ADHD. My oldest daugter acted out very similar to your son. This continued into kindergarten having everyone pass it off as a behavior and marking her as a "bad kid". Finally her first grade teacher agreed with me that it was not a behavior and helped me finally get her diagnosed as ADD. It shocked us that ADD would present this way, but it can. She now takes Adderall and is a totally different kid. She went from a kid that I hated to hear the phone ring during the day because it was usually the school, to her becoming the student of the month for her grade.
