Hello,

My 12 yr old son , who has a mito disease and is autistic has

been hurting himself for over 8 months now. He has been hospitalized

for over 6 months now. He hits, scratches, digs and bites himself.

We've tried numerous meds and different ways of dealing with it but

nothing seems to work. He has been seen by some of the best Drs in the

field in the MA/ NH area but nothing has worked thus far. Has anyone

out there had similar issues???

Mo

Dear Mo: So sorry to hear about your son, . That is so

heartbreaking to hear. My son, Seth, is 13 and he has had

psychological effects of the mito. He hasn't injured himself ever, but

he has had rages and has come after others. We see a psychiatrist (and

I would recommend anyone having bad behavioral or psychological

symptoms to get hooked up now with one). If you have already seen

experts, I am at a loss for what to tell you. All I can tell you is

that I really feel for you and your son. It is such a helpless feeling

to have them so out of control. I feel for all of these kids (and

adults) dealing with psychological aspects of this disease. I think

it's an area many don't expect.

Cindy (mom to Seth, 13, and Ben, 9 both mito)

I don't know if this will be enough info to help, I can't remember exactly

where I saw this,

I have researched so many things. Anyway, I remember hearing about another

autistic

child doing this, and nobody could understand why, but it turned out this

child was in

so much pain this is how he handled it. I'm thinking it was GI pain, but

not possitive on that,

I just remember this child was in excruciating pain, and when they found

the source and treated

him for it, the child stopped hurting himself. I'm so sorry I can't give

more info, I will try to find

where I read this, if I do I will send you the article. I don't know if

this is the same or not, I just

read your post and that article was the first thing I thought of, I had to

share what I could remember,

I just wish I remembered more. Good luck and I'm so sorry this is happening

to him.
