Guest guest
, I have two parents in Indiana who are dealing with the same issues every day. I don't think there is any easy answer but I would be happy to forward your e-mail to them with your permission. Sue Ann Bube President, UMDF Indiana Behavior issues can you help? PLEASE Do any of you deal with behavior issues? gets out of control at times and lately seems more often. He normally talks loud from a slight hearing loss but more and more he has been yelling hitting kicking just plain defiant!!! I have taken several parenting classes but none seem to deal with kids with special needs. Sometimes these outbursts have been a prelude to him getting sick, others it's just him being 7!!! How do any of you handle the outbursts? My friend calls her daughter's 'metabolic meltdowns'. She is lucky though, she has someone at home to relieve her when her daughter gets out of control. Please ALL suggestions are welcome. Thank You, Please contact mito-owner with any problems or questions.

Guest guest
I would be happy to. I have a few questions for the parents experiencing behavior issues with their Mito kids. Have you tried any Behavior Medications? Have you been taught any behavior modification techniques? Is it hard for you to tell if this is a “normal” angry moment or a Mito angry moment? If your child attends school, do you have a Behavior Plan in place? Are the Behavior Meltdowns tied to a Loss of Energy? Overwhelming amount of Homework? Coping with living with Mito (why me)? Can you find any Behavior Triggers (things that ALWAYS seem to set them off)? Is it tied to the same time of day (after lunch)? Guest guest
> > Do any of you deal with behavior issues? > , we deal with behavior issues in two of my mito kids but I think they are different than what you are dealing with. My daughter has BiPolar II and my 9 year old son has BiPolar I with psychosis...it takes medication, counseling and a whole lot of patience.. It is the most difficult thing I have ever had to deal with..I hope you are able to figure out something that helps your son, wish I could be more help. But I havent found the right combination of things that help my son yet either... Just wanted you to know that I understand S
Guest guest
Some medications can cause "interesting" behavior. Do you treat them like regular kids? same rules, chores, discipline, expectations? My 4 are expected to behave appropriately- period. Are they perfect- no, they are human- everyone has bad days. Sleep & pacing are extremely important; tired kids ( and adults) are cranky, less able to cope, and shorter-tempered. Mine require more sleep than "average". Many kids do not get enough sleep- and with Mito- the requirements are higher and more necessary to keep them going. On the days mine have sports, they nap before practice- as they get to bed later. Guest guest
, It is so hard and when there is no one to spell you it is even harder I KNOW. Being a single parent myself I have learned sometimes you just need to do what you can and take a break. I am lucky enough to have a great mom here throughout the week to help. 's behavior can sometimes be very difficult. Hitting, kicking, hair pulling. She has PDD-NOS and OCD. Has he been worked up by a behavioral ped? She started paxil and is doing better. Just take a breather when you need. Let us know, Dawn

Guest guest
Hi, I have an 8 yr old daughter and I struggled with this for a couple of years. She had outbursts that were unbelieveable. Screaming, scratching, digging, kicking, grabbing people etc. She did everything but bite. After numerous dr visits to rule out things, the Neuro decided it was a chemical imbalance due to the Mito and we tried various drugs to help. She could not tolerate ritalin, adderall, adderall xr, straterra all because her heart raced to fast. We did try behavior modification alone first but the school only made the problem worse. Hannah also has PDD-NOS and ADHD which complicated the situation. Anyways, she is now on Zoloft for the anxiety, Risperdol for the outbursts and Focalin for the ADHD. I have my happy girl back, she is learning at school and now when she gets angry she can control it herself with words instead of actions and comforting from me. I also did change her to a charter school and that was a huge difference in the quality of teacher. I really had a hard time emotionally giving her so much medicine along with the mito meds and Prevacid, but changed my mind quickly when I saw how it brought my happy child back to me. > > Do any of you deal with behavior issues? gets out of control > at times and lately seems more often. Guest guest
This sounds a lot like my 8 year old...but he will bite when he is in a 'meltdown'. He also has 'autistic spectrum' disorders. I am wondering if Hannah had any side affects from the risperdol??? Guest guest
wish his doctor's would help more in this area. They don't want to use any medication yet, not until the full diagnosis of the muscle biopsy is in. I would like to take him in for a psych evaluation but know it may not do us any good yet. the meds will not make a different with the dx coming...insist they try something. Video-taping is a good thing...they can't argue with it. I would schedule the psych eval...sometimes there is a wait and like I said before, it really shouldn't matter if you get the dx after starting meds. deb...mom to four great kids and wife to one amazing guy!www.LifeofLoveProject.orgwww.debwells.com
Guest guest
Wow, I so see justin in what you described. Today he has been up since four a.m. and I'm exhausted!!! All morning I've heard him screaming because his toys weren't doing what he wanted them to. Well that and yelling at me to fix them. I'm just glad that he didn't start jumping on me or anything like that. He's a real boney kid and he hurts me. Some of his doctor's have seen slight versions of his behavior, but not full blown outbursts. We have talked of him being medicated but his neurologist doesn't want to medicate him yet since we don't have a full diagnosis yet. Meanwhile I pull my hair out and try not to take him out in public since the slightest thing can set him off. Thank you for writing because it gives me comfort to know that I am not alone, and there is hope for us yet. Guest guest
Sometimes I think they are going to tell me that it's my parenting that is lacking but I am with this child 24/7 and I have tried every approach I have learned. I've even picked up some tips from watching SuperNanny, but those only work some of the time. I know its hard...if they do say something like that...tell them you want an IN_HOME behavior consultant to show you some new strategies. That's their job. You might have them refer you for respite or behavior therapy, too which could be very helpful. The main negative of behavior therapy (besides have someone else parenting your child in ways you might not always agree with) is that sometimes it gets much worse before it gets better. BTW, SuperNanny ROCKS!!!! I love her! But with our HF Autistic child, those techniques are not going to work well either. deb...mom to four great kids and wife to one amazing guy!www.LifeofLoveProject.orgwww.debwells.com
