Guest guest
Gastric motility is my daughters primary problem in regards to her mito disease. She suffers delayed emptying(has had two pyloroplastys without help), reflux (has had two nissen fundoplications and still suffers from it) At 11 months(she is now 8 years) she stopped orally eating all together and has gone from a NG tube, to a Gtube to a Jtube to TPN and thankfully back to J feeds. -- Re: Vomiting - Anne That could be the answer for my son too. It takes a long time for him to digest food. He had a nuclear ultrasound when he was a two months old baby and it showed that he still had milk in his stomach after more than two hours after taking it. However, none of his doctors ever told me that he suffers gastroparesis (delayed empty stomach). When discharged from NICU he was given reglan but I always tought it was for reflux which he had and they did told me about. Years later after been in several Yahoo Groups and learning from other parents about gastroparesis then I started to realize that my son suffers from it too besides the GERD (reflux). Do you know if delayed gastric motility is directly related to mito disease? I mean do most of kids with mito has gastric motility problems? Guest guest
Hi Marie, From what I know, delayed gastric motility can definitely be a result of mitochondrial disease. In fact, the pediatric GI doctor that Asher sees (in Boston - we fly up from Florida to see him) specializes in motility disorders and he did a study with Dr. Shoffner (the fresh muscle biopsy expert in Atlanta) relating gastric motility, constipation (which often comes with gastric motility and isn't necessarily the problem of having hard stools - it's that the stools don't come out! even when they are normal and soft), and mitochondrial disease. I don't know if " most " kids with mito have gastric motility issues but it sure seems to be that many do. Where do you live? There are 3 specialists in the country who deal with gastric motility issues ( and in Boston, Hyman in Kansas City, and I can't remember the other one). I really found the best help with in Boston - they truly understand motility and mito. Anne R (Asher's mom) Re: Vomiting - Anne That could be the answer for my son too.
