G. Boles, M.D.

Co-Division Head

Medical Genetics

Children's Hospital Los Angeles

Assistant Professor of Pediatrics

Keck School of Medicine at USC

will be our special guest on Monday evening - 3/21/2005 - from 9 PM to

10 PM Eastern at the MDA Mito Chat. We anticipate many participants

and questions, thus we will use the following format. We realize that

the format is somewhat strict but this allows us to have order and to

make our guest comfortable. If you are coming to view the chat and not

ask a question - please log off and log back in as a " guest " . This

will allow the maximum number of people who have questions the

opportunity. If you have asked a question and it has been answered,

please log off and log back in as a guest so that others have the

opportunity to enter the chat. The chat allows a certain number of

participants and when we exceed that number, no one else is allowed to

enter.

As you enter the room, you will be given a number which will be openly

given on the chat site. That number is sequential thus in the order

you entered. When your number comes up, you may ask one question and

only one question will be open for the doctor at a time. When he has

completed answering the question the next person in the sequential

order will be allowed to post their question. You will be notified by

private message when it is your turn to ask your question just prior

to the time to post it. You might find it helpful to have pre-posted

the question in preparation for entering but be very careful not to

hit the send key until you have been given clearance to do so. Please

post your question in ALL CAPS as this will help Dr Boles recognize

each new question. In this case - it will not be considered shouting.

When our guest has completed answering the question he will post a " ? "

to let us know that he is ready for the next question to be asked.

Please reserve this chat for questions to be asked of our guest only.

It is a very special gift of time and expertise that the guest is

offering us and we need to treat our guest with respect. If you wish

to chat with someone in the room, please go to the private chat and

communicate.

Anyone who violates the instructions will receive a warning. If a

second warning is necessary, the person will lose their privilege to

be in the chat and will be removed. We hope that we don't find it

necessary to do this.

The chat transcript will be available on the MDA website as soon as it

has been edited by Dr Boles and the MDA Chat Administrator. Sometimes

this takes a considerable amount of time as these individuals are very

busy. We ask for your patience while this is being prepared. We are

very happy you have joined us tonight and hope you enjoy this special

chat session. We also express our gratitude to Dr Boles for being with

us for this chat.

Dr. Boles is the Director of Clinical Genetics, Childrens Hospital,

Los Angeles. He received his medical degree from University of

California at Los Angeles (UCLA). He completed his internship and

residency in pediatrics at Harbor-UCLA Medical Center and a fellowship

in genetics at Yale University School of Medicine. Dr. Boles is

presently organizing a mitochondrial disease clinic at Childrens

Hospital. Since Nov. 1993, he has been Assistant Professor of Clinical

Pediatrics, Keck School of Medicine of the University of Southern

California. His major areas of research are disorders of mitochondrial

DNA; present research focuses on screening of the entire mitochondrial

genome for mutations in individuals with various phenotypes and
