Hi-

I know I have seen some of you mention cooling vests for

overheating... I am looking for more info, where you get them,

pricing, etc. We are having an unseasonably warm day here in Boston

(close to 90 degrees!) and I noticed that Jack got overheated VERY

quickly. Overheating is a new thing for us... He is three and I'm

sure will want to try and keep up with his big brother this summer

outside. It is a little scary how fast he looked like he was going to

pass out! Any help would be greatly appreciated...

Thanks,

Hi,

We got my daughter's vest at http://www.heatreliefdepot.com I really

like her vest and it has worked well for us. Heat Relief Depot has all

kinds of cooling products but we just have the vest. The cooling pack

inserts are sort of like a wax. In ice water (frig or whatever is cool),

they turn into a harder material. The vest lasts about 2 to 2 1/2 hours and

then need to be recooled. This has not been an issue for us as we take

along a small cooler and the cooling packs get cold again pretty quickly.

This has been a real life saver for us and allows my daughter to be able to

go outside (We live in Texas so it gets hot!). Oh, and when we got her

vest, if you sent an e-mailing stating that you needed it for a medical

condition, you got a percentage off the price. I think Holli's ended up

costing just under $100 with the discount.

Grace gets hers from the Moody Foundation, but MDA pays for them. Moody will provide them for free if you are willing to go on a waiting list (odds are you will not get it this summer, if you are on the list.) You can also pay them directly for the vest, and I believe it is around three hundred dollars. The kit they send Grace includes a vest, extra packs, a cooling hat, wristbands, neck band, a cooling teddy bear, an insert for your pillow and if he needs it they can also get wheelchair seat pads. They just stopped using the manufacturer they had to make the vests, and now it is one woman and her sewing machine so I do cannot estimate how long it takes her.

You can find more info about them at www.sarahmoodyfoundation.org. You will need a doctors note, justifying the need for the vest.

Another place to check out for other cooling apperal is www.heatreliefdepot.com. Even though there website states they do childrens vests, they no longer do. This is the old manufacturer for Moody. They still use all the other products, but not the vests. (No bad feelings on the manufacturer, they only stopped making custom kids vests so they can devote time to making vests for the soldiers in the Middle East.)

I believe others use a company called Texas Cool Vest, or something in that nature. I have no experience with this company though.

If you need any more info, feel free to ask. Unfortunatly keeping Grace cool consumes much of my time, so I have become very knowlegable with this.

Best wishes

Hi ,

I've been wondering how you all are doing - wow 90 degrees in Boston!

That is truly amazing for April. I'm getting the cooling vest and other

cooling equipment through the Moody Foundation. Just type in that

name for a search and you should get connected to it. They provide the

items free as long as you have a doctors orders.

What did you end up doing about the nighttime breathing stuff?

I just emailed Heat Relief Depot (www.heatreliefdepot.com) And they say

they still do kids vests. Here's the response I received.

Thank you for writing Heat Relief Depot/Biochem Corp. Yes we do make

custom vests to fit children. The price is $129 which includes the vest

and 2 sets of inserts....you will receive a 10% discount for medical

reasons (no doctors note is necessary). If you wish to upgrade to the

Indura Fabric it would be an additional $10. We recommend the Indura

(which is flame resistant and more durable than the cotton fabric) for

active children.

Since this is a custom vest made to fit your child with lots of growing

room.....it takes 4 to 6 weeks for delivery.

We do not work with insurance companies...however, if it is an

organization that wants to purchase this for you.....we will need a

signed purchase order from them which can be faxed to . We

need the following measurements: Chest, Waist, Height, Weight, Age, and

top of middle of shoulder to waist.

Shirley /Heat Relief Specialist

I am going to call them and get ours ordered here in just a few

minutes. Hope this helps some. I know without one we were going to be

stuck inside all summer so I can't wait till it gets here.

Hi everyone,

I spoke to the Moody foundation this am and they are not

backordered for vests. In fact, we ordered my sons about 4 weeks ago

and it's in the mail so we should get it soon!
