Guest guest
Sheldon has another sinus infection and I'm trying to figure out what we can do to prevent these almost-constant sinus infections. I have always been reluctant to give him any meds that I don't know are safe for mito. Not to mention that I hate the thought of having to give him more meds than he's already on. Does anyone out there know if sudafed is ok with mito? What about allergy meds? While we're on the subject, what about things like phenergan for nausea? Docs always mention anti-nausea meds when he's in the hospital and I never know whether he should have them or not so we've avoided them so far. I believe he gets the sinus infections from a dust mite allergy and we do hot washes on his bedding but we have a rug in our room and our mattress isn't covered yet... Thanks,

Guest guest
I cannot speak for all mito meds but I will tell you that both Samya and Leanna were on massive allergy meds. In fact Leanna was on nasonex, flonase, Claritin, allegro, singulair for the last 2 years nonstop and none of them ever affected her and her mito doc knew she was on them and was not concerned. Phenergan was also used a lot for nausea through the years and was fine for both girls. The mito doc did say that gentamycin (if given in liquid form, not eye drops) was not good and he always told me to stay away from any cold meds that had pseudonephendrine because it causes rapid hart beat which makes the body work too hard and can make it hard for the cells to make energy. I use to give it onlywhen very desperate from congestion although it never seemed to affect her much. That is all I know. Hope that helps. Guest guest
Sudafed is the same thing as psuedoephedrine. It can cause an increase in heart rate as well as an increase in blood pressure. Many of the sinus meds have the same side effects. I think Audrey takes Claritin and Allegra. She has many problems with allergies as does her mom, Amie. Guest guest
Gracies allergist (who knows alot about mito) suggested avoiding things like Benadryl or anything with even the smallest sedative side affect. Grace aslo cannot have anything that is metabolized through the liver. That being said, we avoid the OTC types. She was first started on Zyrtec, wich is supposed to be the best for allergies. Even though it is a non drowsy med, Grace was blacking out from it. The doctor said that they label it that way, for the majority of the population but it makes sence that a mito person would still get sedated. She is now on Clarinex. This works but not quite as well as the Zyrtec, but she has no adverse side affects. Her next step will be Allegra, but she is still a little too small for it yet. Her doctor said that he would rather her be on the Allegra, because it is supposed to be better for allergies. Going the daily, prevention route seems to work well. Her asthma gets triggered by the allergies, and tends to go downhill fast. Now she rarely even needs her asthma medications. YEAH! Get the NEW version of MSN Messenger - it's FREE!
