Guest guest
Hi! Joey was dx. with Sinus arrythmia tachycardia/SVT yesterday. He has several events of Tachycardia and 4 SVT's. His Cardio doctor put him on Atenolol. Which is a Beta-Blocker. Does anyone have any experience with this medication? I'm scared to start him on something new. Especially for the heart. Any help would be great! Tamara
Guest guest
Don't know if this will help or not. I took it myself (I don't have mito just SVT) and had to stop taking it within about a month. It was rather sedating. It was like everything around me went in slow motion (and apparently so did I). It also didn't control my HR very well. Lots of break through tachy episodes. Guest guest
Does he have asthma? If so, beta blockers are not the best.
Guest guest
My husband takes Atenolol for high blood pressure. He hasn't had a single bad reaction from it, but then again, he's a grown man and not a child. I hope it works well for Joey. e -- Anyone on the Beta-Blocker called Atenolol? Hi! Guest guest
Both of my daughters are on Atenolol and have been for several years. lies takes it for V-tach, SVT and neurocardiogenic syncope. takes it for neurocardiogenic syncope and as a migraine preventative. Their pulmonologist carefully monitored their pulmonary function studies to ensure that it did not cause trouble with their asthma (fortunately it didn't). They have done well with the drug. We tried to lower the dose several time, but they became symptomatic within 24-48 hours each time. For us it has been a " good drug " ; nice clinical response without side effects. It would probably be worth trying the medication with careful monitoring for potential side effects.
Guest guest
Im on Metoprolol, same family, different drug... it controls my heart rate extremely well, and has all but stopped the ectopic beats (I have Paroxysmal Atrial Tachycardia). without it my resting heartrate is 120-140, with it my resting heart rate is 70... BIG difference!! lol! Keely > > Don't know if this will help or not. I took it myself (I don't have mito just SVT) and had to stop taking it within about a month. It was rather sedating. Guest guest
Tamara: My son Jonah is on Carvedilol...another beta blocker. Slightly different situation as he was diagnosed with dilated cardiomyopathy as an infant and subsequently diagnosed with Complex IV mito deficiency at about age 3. His doctors do believe that his cardiomyopathy is part of his mito. We started him just a few months ago after years of tachycardia and more recent arrythmia. His doctors were quite cautious in starting him - as beta blockers suppress the sympathetic nervous system and they were concerned that it might make it harder for him to weather intercurrent illness and metabolic crises. He was VERY tired when he initially started on beta blockers....and we started him on a tiny dose and have been working up VERY slowly. But once he adjusted he seems to be doing better. It is really less tiring for him to have a more "normal" heart rate. I found that he did better with his last illness also. Instead of sustaining 180 + b/m for days on end....he was more like 140. Quite a change for him. The biggest cautions our doctors shared were the effect during intercurrent illness and the fact that it can mask some blood sugar issues. We were told to monitor his blood sugar during illness or stress....and to potentially back down or stop the beta blocker when he was ill. Overall I think he is doing better on it. Good luck. Guest guest
Tamara, takes Propanolol/inderol a different beta-blocker. He takes it for cyclical vomiting and has tolerated it very well.
