Guest guest
Hello to Everyone! I am wondering how you all handle other parents/people that think they know better than you do??? We were at a ball game last night. At our fields, just like any others, there is a LOT of bare dirt. Aidan and were sitting in it, making piles, and then smashing them, while we all enjoyed the game. Like all kids, couldn't resist grabbing handfuls of dirt, and hiking them at Aidan. After telling him several times, to stop throwing the dirt, and trying to get him interested in building piles, or playing with his trucks, I took him over to his chair, and made him sit for a few minutes. I didn't snatch him up, or plunk him down, with force. I didn't yell at him, or smack his hand for throwing the dirt. I just picked him up, moved him to the chair, and told him that he needed to sit there until he could stop throwing the dirt!! This other parent that had been watching the kids play, came over and started telling me that I was being too hard on him!! That he was just too small to understand that what he was doing was wrong!! I calmly explained that although is small for his age, he is 2 and a half years old, and that he definitely understood what I was telling him. Well, this mom starts getting more and more upset, and basically accuses me of lying! couldn't possibly be that old, and he definitely couldn't understand what I was saying. A couple of other parents from our team, that know and the situation, came over and finally got this other parent to go back to her side of the field, and leave us alone, but after thinking on this over night, it really upset me. In this day and age where a lot of kids are allowed to run rampant, and other parents are just supposed to ignore their rude behavior, I was disciplining my g-child. I wasn't being abusive, I wasn't yelling, and I wasn't out of control. How would you all have handled a situation like this?? Leah's comment about Olivia being 4 yrs old and getting to do things that a 4 yr old gets to do, even though she is smaller than most kids her age, really got my attention. We're supposed to treat our kids by their age and not by their size, and I think that should go as far as discipling our kids too. Am I wrong?? Thanks for letting me vent. Any opinions or suggestions would be appreciated! Hugs to you all! Guest guest
Pat My daughter is 18 months and looks like a 4 month. She is very vocal and smart, and if you say " no " to her she curls up her lips and cries quite a fake cry. once she did that infront of her ECI therapist and the therapist reminded me that she will be hitting the terrible 2's soon, and she will need discipline according her age. That kind of gave me a wake up call, although she is 19 months because of her size even me the mother could not imagine her as a terrible 2. I am now more concious about not letting her get away with things (her offenses are now limited to trying to lick our shoes and taking her glasses off) just because of her size and medical condition. Guest guest
I am wondering how you all handle other parents/people that think they know better than you do??? I thihk you handled the disipline just fine....I don't think I would be that calm if my child was throwing dirt..(especially after repeated warnings) The thing that bothers me is that we as parents feel we need to justify what we are doing with ourselves and children when someone questions how we handled the situation. I have a recent situation that is similiar to that too!!!! I took a friend to a VA hosiptal to get X-rays on her leg. We were waiting an hour past scheduled time and my boys were getting rowdy. I let them play in the hallway. We came back inside the waiting room and Mathieu (17 months old) threw his cars at an older woman. I told him not to do that, and he looked at me, smiled, and proceeded to throw them harder!!! His fine motor skills are out of this world and he has the potential of hurting someone. I was furious and concerned for the other woman. So, I took his cars away, and scolded him for throwing the cars. Another woman spoke up and said I was being too hard on him. I told her he was 17 months old and he knows exactly what he was doing. She said something else but I ignored her. When someone else is looking in, they see percieve things differenlty. The fact is, they do not know your child, and they have not lived and nurtured them as you have; nor do they have the same values as you. I just ignore it!!! It seems to make them a little more mad because they are usually looking for a fight anyway.
Guest guest
Pat, I'm afraid I would probably come across quite rude to this mother, and tell her she needed to back off and mind her own business! And I would also have a few word for her when she called me a liar! OH MY GOSH!!! I think I would have gotten pretty loud and rude at that point! Good for you keeping your cool! I'm of the " Who do you think you are telling me what to do with MY child? " group! I actually could see myself going into the whole spill about RSS, growth disorders, treating kids there age and not there size, and basic lecture mode! I have become such an advocate for my kids here (foster kids and Storm) that I am good at letting it out and telling people exactly what is needed and what is not needed! I know " crazy mother " but that's okay! As long as my kids get there needs met! I'm so sorry there are such idiots out there that think they know better! I think the best thing we can do is educate them as best we can! Good Luck! Carmen
Guest guest
Hey Pat- I have had this happen in similar situations with DOminic. WHen I let him climb or do other activities (soccer, etc.) some parents think that he is " too young " to be allowed to do it. THen I have to explain that he is 4.5 years old and I treat him his age not his size whenever possible. You are going to have nosy parents say things for a long time and I know it is hurtful and frustrating. You handled it very well and it seems like you had support from the other parents. I hope the venting helped you feel better! Guest guest
Pat, Good for you for treating his age! ESPECIALLY at the terrible 2s. Unfortunately too many adults don't know when to keep their opinions to themselves. The fact that she kept arguing with you and wouldn't believe how old is shows her absolute ignorance and lack of proper behavior for herself. I think you did the right thing to stand your ground--you are one of the few people who knows best, not some stranger at a ballgame. If others had to step in to ask her to leave, that's ridiculous--she obviously has her own issues. I believe in letting children explore and create and experience, but not at the sacrifice of learning proper behavior. I've too have had encounters in public places where somebody just HAS to share their 2 cents worth, and because of those times I have learned to really bite my tongue when i see other parents doing things which I don't approve. , 's mom Other Parents!! Guest guest
Pat- I wish I could tell you what my parents did when I was a little girl. However, being so young, I was too busy being a little girl to pay much attention to what the grown-ups were saying <wink>. If there's one thing I've learned in my adult life, it's that there's a lot of people out there who are are rude and inconsiderate. They just don't think. Yet they still feel the need to base what THEY would do on everyone ELSE in the world...even though their base of knowledge has nothing to do with everyone else. If you don't know them, politely thank them for their assistance but let them know there are issues they're unaware of and that you have things under control. And then do whatever you dang well please. If you DO know them, or if there's a good chance you'll see them again in the future, keep explaining what RSS is about...maybe even show them the blue leaflet...so you can give them visual and auditory proof that 's not an infant and can " take it. " If worse comes to worse, wait until B can talk a little better and then let him give 'em hell...it worked for me. Imagine Little Sharon in 1969, age 3. Mothers could still leave their kids alone for a minute or two and not worry so much that they'll be abducted. We were food shopping and Mom gave me a small bag of fruit for the produce man to weigh. A woman with a shopping cart came behind me. And there I was...age 3....looked 1 (or less?)...and I looked up at woman and said, " Hey lady, don't try to get in front of me! " Wasn't I precious? <wink> -Sharon- 38Y, 2M, 21D 4'6.75 " , holding steady at just 93#!!!

Guest guest
Pat, I have dealt with this on more than one occasion! Other people can really be idiots sometimes. was in the hospital for 7.5 months when he was born. The first time wewent anywhere in public with him other than to doctors was to Denny's for lunch. I was so excited to show him off! He was about 9 or 10 months old, with an apnea monitor, oxygen, a pulse oximeter, and a feeding tube/pump, so we were quite a sight! We were seated at a table at the back of the restaurant and got a lot of stares on the way there. This man who was seated in the fron of the restaurant got up, walked all the way to the back where we were seated, and said to my mom (thinking she was the mom), " Excuse, me ma'am, but WHAT is wrong with your baby? " He floored us of course, and I was very upset. I don't even remember what my response was. There were times when I did get rude with people. One day we were sitting in a food court at a mall eating lunch, and I was tube feeding . He was probably 2 years old, weighing 15 lbs. This lady came over to us, looked at us in disgust, and said, " Can't you do that in the bathroom? " My reply was, do you eat in the bathroom? I'll be happy to feed him in the bathroom if we can use the toilet out here. You know the old saying, " Please don't pee in the pool, we don't swim in your toilet... " I said something to her of that effect. Another time we were at a restuarant for dinner, and I didn't order a meal for . The lady at the table next to us was looking at me as if I was starving him, and made a nasty comment about how we could all eat & just let him sit there. I wanted so badly to say something else to her, but I was with family, so I was nice. However, my response did make the lady feel like she put her foot in her mouth. Sometimes I got tired of all the explanations on why he was so small. Here's a story that may make you laugh. When was a year old (weighing 8 lbs.), we were sitting in the waiting room of a doctor's office. I was playing with , telling him to do things such as clap your hands, play peekaboo, etc. was pretty smart, and knew his colors. I held up colored blocks, and asked him to show me which was red, blue, green, etc. As I was doing this, I noticed a Hispanic lady watching us in disbelief, almost hyperventilating. I knew she thought was just born. Another lady in the office asked how old was, and because I didn't feel like going into the long story, I said he was 2 weeks old. The Hispanic lady heard this and almost fainted, muttering some prayer. It was so funny! The way I look at it, if people are dumb enough to put their foot in their mouth, be rude, or just plain stupid, then you have every right to put them in their place and not feel bad abot it! I can understand a person wanting to give you advice (whether they are right or wrong), but when they accuse you of lying, something must be WRONG with them! I wouldn't worry about what others think - you know how to deal with your child/grandchild best, and that is all that matters! Guest guest
Kim, Your story about the lady in the Doctors office brings to mind a funny story that happened to me at Wal Mart. I had Liam with me, he was then 12 months and weighed about 14 lbs and was only like 27 inches tall... A man asked me how old he was and I said " 1 " .... He says " Are you sure? " My answer " Well, when I got him from the pound 9 months ago they said he was 3 months, so yes, I'm sure " and walked away..... Probably not the greatest answer (refering that you got your kid from the pound) but it was the first thing that pooped out of my head... I hate when people comment on his size and he is starting to feel it.... We went to Kmart looking for starter skates (Which they do not carry) and I asked the lady. Well after explaining who makes them, what they look like etc.... She said " Aren't you jumping the gun buying him skates? they're made for ages 2 and over. " He looked at her and said " I'm 3 " ..... Mom to Liam (3 1/2 years old 34 3/4 " 27 lbs SGA, Hypothyriod, Epilepsy.) Guest guest
Hi Jodi, I had to chime in with a story as well.... After I delivered the twins, my son was sent to the NICU for a month and I ended up staying in the hospital for three weeks due to complications from the delivery(Blood clots). So, one day my husband and daughter and I were riding the elevator up to the NICU floor and these two ladies asked us why we were going to the NICU with a newborn? I said we were visiting our twin newborn son. They asked if my son and daughter were identical twins and we politely said " No " . They then asked if both babies were from the same father! LOL. I wish we had a snappy comeback but, I think my husband and I were in disbelief! Craig just told them he was the father of both! I think he was a little offended.. Guest guest
I say you were right to take away something she was looking forward to. Sometimes you need to hit them where it hurts and seeing her brothers and sisters eating Ice cream when she was looking forward to doing it too, and knowing that because she hit another child is the reason it was taken from her is as good of a punshiment as I could have thought of...... Guest guest
Hey Everyone! Thank you for all of your responses! I was just SO frustrated that someone that doesn't know , or his situation, would be so forward, and negative! It's nice to know that you've all had the same type problem, and that we're not alone in this. LOL Hi Carmen, After meeting you at the convention last year, I can just picture you standing there and telling THIS other person what was needed, and what was not! LOL I just wish I'd had the presence of mind to go into lecture mode, then maybe I could have bored her into submission? LOL Thanks for the support! Sabina, I think it's hard to remember that the kids are as old as they are just because they're so small. I have to remind myself daily that B is 2 and 1/2 yrs old, and that he needs to be treated as such. I guess it just takes practice! LOL F, thanks for the support! And venting, along with all the support here, really has made me feel better. I guess we all have to put up with idiots somedays, huh? , I LOVED the pound comment!! I wish I could think that fast on my feet! LOL Hey Jodie, Everyone is now mistaking and my girlfriend's almost one-year old, McKenzie, for being twins! LOL We laugh when B opens his mouth, and they realize their mistake! Saundra, I can't believe that someone would be so idiotic as to ask if the twins have the same father! LOL , I totally agree with your taking away the ice cream! I think it was appropriate and deserved! Why should she get a treat when her behavior was so out of line?? Did the punishment work?? Did the bad behavior at school stop? If so, then I think it was a very effective way to get your message across! Hey Sharon, YES!! You sound like you were a most precious, and precocious, child! LOL In fact, your antics are always wonderful to read, and you sound a lot like my almost 4 yr old granddaughter! LOL She says the darnedest things some days!! All this brought a funny story to mind that has nothing to do with RSS. I have 4 kids, and I used to baby-sit another 8 most every day. One day I ventured over to the grocery for some much needed supplies, trailing all 12 kids. A lady approached me coming down the aisle, and just blurted out all of the sudden, " Hasn't anyone ever told you about birth control???? " I couldn't believe she was being so rude, so instead of explaining, I just turned to her and replied " Yep!! But I just find my husband irresistible!!!! " and I kept on going down the aisle! LOL People will say the darnedest things, won't they?? Thanks again for all the stories, support, and advice! Hugs to you all!!! Guest guest
LOL! I hope the woman had the sense to stay quiet after that! Re: Re: Other Parents!! (kind of long LOL) Hey Everyone!
