Guest guest
Hi! My son is getting ready to have surgery for hypospadias onJune 18th. I was just wondering if anyone else's child has been through this, and how long the recovery took, what to expect? Thanks, and I can't wait to see everyone at the convention. le-mom to Datreon 11lb 10oz 8 1/2 months
Guest guest
Willie had the hypospadius surgery when he was about 2 and a half (before we had a diagnosis of RSS). I will say it was pretty easy before the surgery when he wasn't allowed to eat or drink anything. He didn't care:) The doctor had me remove the catheter at home. Given the chance to do it again(no thanks) I'd have taken him into the ped or Urgent Care and had them remove it. I did it okay but it had me shaking for days. We spent a lot of time in the tub together loosening the bandages. Luckily, he loves the water. While I wouldn't call it a great experience, it went okay, and seemed less painful than my older son's tonsilectomy. Best of luck to you. Guest guest
le, This is one issue we did not have to face with Max. Can you believe it? He seems to have everything else, but managed to skip over this one! But those who have posted about their children having this procedure have mostly had great results. In fact, I can remember moms posting their worries and then being surprised that their sons were running around the next day. I hope that the surgery goes well for you both. And I hope that someone with more experience will read this post and give you better advice than I. Be sure to let us know how it goes, okay? Jodi Z. Guest guest
le, My son Jake had three hypospadius surgeries (his was pretty severe). I think one of the most important things is to make sure your son is admitted the night before and put on an IV of D10. He should not be NPO (fasted). Then he should not be released from the hospital after the surgery until he is eating on his own. For this, it means usually a two night stay. Also, make sure you have a thorough discussion with the anethesiologist before the surgery. Ask if they can do a " block " this way when he comes out of surgery, he already has pain meds in his system for a while, which will be useful. We didn't the first time and soon after he was out of surgery he was in agony and it took forever to get the pain meds up from the pharmacy. Sometimes this takes a while to get the meds, because the surgeon writes up the orders after the surgery is over, then it goes to the pharmacy, then you are at the mercy of the pharmacy. The day after all three of Jake's surgeries he was literally up and running around. We were really suprised. The site itself looks nasty, so as long as you are prepared for a bloody, swollen look you will be ok. Just know it gets better quickly. As soon as my surgeon gave us the ok for baths, he got one like four times a day (on the doctor's suggestion). This really helps heal it fast. The scaps come off and it looks sooooo much better. The site really heals fast. Your son will most likely come home with a catheter and a double diaper. The catheter will come out of the penis and he will pee into the second (outer) diaper. So unless your son has a BM you won't have to see the site too much. The BM diaper changes require help. You definitely need two sets of hands. One to hold your son down (it will be painful for him) and the second to quickly clean and rediaper. Other than the BM diaper changes, Jake really had no pain. He was on a few different meds. One for bladder spasms (caused by the catheter), two for pain (I think tylenol and motrin switched on and off) and an antibiotic to prevent infection. So, that on top of his usual meds got confusing, so we kept a chart so my husband and I could keep track of things. Do not ever miss the spasm medication, because that is painful. Make sure you set your alarm and get up in the middle of the night to administer, or you will have an unhappy camper. I think it was every six hours, so it isn't too bad. Jake is fine and all is well, please feel free to post additional questions. It was not nearly as bad as I thought. Alison > Hi! My son is getting ready to have surgery for hypospadias onJune 18th. Guest guest
--Wow I couldn't of told it this good myself ,reading this sure makes memories. has had two hypospadias surgeries and of coure now we will be on our 3rd one in the near future, He was like 14 months I think when we had the first one I am not certain because he had to weigh 12 pounds for anthesia and that took forever .It goes exactly like you said but I had to do three diapers a changing cause he also had hip dysplasia and had to have the support, his was pretty severe to, I don't know if I would of known about the second hole till we put him up on an above ground pool to pee pee and saw two streams!! I freaked out on thet!! He had this other surgery at three and well now I see him use the potty and there is that two streams again!! We are at 5 yrs now and I am really going to feel bad if they are going to want him back in diapers!! They are waiting to see if while being on G H if it will heal up on it's own, but I doubt it it is pretty good size, he will also either just sew the hole or do more intense surgery cause the sides look awful and he will have to have a skin graph done UGH!! But it does go just like you said, I remember to the cramps Get the meds!! I took pictures to because it did look so swollen(awful and bloody looked messed up)I have since now gotten a second opinion from the head doctor of uroligy, I took the second opinion, The meds they gave were liquid tylenol with codiene and demerall(sp).. mistake for him being sensory.. he bouced off the wall and thought he was superman jumping off the steps, that meds made him not feel the pain but didn't help him with it when it wore off and then he really felt him, I told him!! Do they ever listen!!I hope things go well and for Jake was his this extent on the third and what age is he? Well just wanted to add my two cents ha ha not many on here have gone through this it is good(not) to talk to someone about it!!Thanks alot and hugs - In RSS- Support , " alisontonyhoward " <ajhoward@a...> wrote: > le, > > My son Jake had three hypospadius surgeries (his was pretty > severe).
