Guest guest
And though I am sorry that I have to be here, I'm glad I found you (I hope that makes sense). I was just diagnosed with hyper-thyroid/Grave's disease 4wks ago. I had a 104.5 fever and went to my internist. He took a look at me and told me he thought I had a thyroid issue. And he was right. My labs came back hyper with very low tsh and very high T3 and T4. After a repeat of the tests, I was put on propylthiouracil . Here's a little history... I have two children and never really recovered from the second. After the c-section with her, I had my gallbladder out and then began to have odd symptoms including spots in front of my eyes, double vision, a weird hump on my back etc. In Jan, more symptoms started- palipatations, rapid heart beat (over 170 bpm),muscle weakness and fatigue. I thought it was from stress until I went to the dr for the fever. Oddly enough, I haven't lost a pound. I was already overweight and I continue to gain, even hyperthyroid. I have polycystic ovarian syndrom which my doctor blames the inability to lose weight on. I am feeling awful right now- I am afraid to drive because of the spots and blurry vision, I can't walk very far (or carry my children), and I am jumpy and nervous. Plus my stomach is a wreck and my heart is beating hard and fast. The meds are starting to help (I was given a higher dose of Toprol (for my heart) and 6oomg of PTC per day. Some of the jumpiness is gone, which is wonderful. I finally convinced my dr that I needed to go on sick leave- I couldn't even handle walking from the parking lot anymore. And was having a lot of problems handling the high stress job I hold. I will be out of work for a few weeks until I can get to the endocrinologist, eye doctor etc. So, that is the " quick " history! Thanks for listening! Bridget

Perfect sense. > The meds are starting to help (I > was given a higher dose of Toprol (for my heart) and 6oomg of PTC per > day. Some of the jumpiness is gone, which is wonderful. At the risk of being accused of creating a jargon, I assume that is 600mg of Propylthiouracil, which we abbreviate PTU, rather than PTC, which you'll probably figure out from the archive when/if you have a read. 600mg is a big starting dose, and you'll probably have to cut it within 2 to 3 weeks. Also PTU is best taken in three doses a day so I assume you are taking 4 pills every 8 hours? Ovary problems can be autoimmune in nature as well as hormonal, so I doubt it is just a weight thing, the endo might want to do some more tests. Weight gain in hyperthyroidism is quite common, whilst everyone assumes easy weightloss is a plus, having been there I can assure you it isn't nice, and often doesn't happen till the body finally stops " coping " with the thyrotoxicosis. Consider looking for a low stress job whilst on sick leave, some people go back to high powered, high stress jobs after treatment but I don't think it is doing yourself any favours unless you really enjoy the work and find it unusually fulfilling. Although sometimes things that seem like high stress when you are hyperthyroid are a lot less stressful once you are treated. -----BEGIN PGP SIGNATURE----- Comment: Using GnuPG with Mozilla - http://enigmail.mozdev.org iD8DBQE+sOXRGFXfHI9FVgYRAkH5AJ41S2I2jVTcMkKIaLJJfG+9lIasxwCgsjxc qy5RHxL6EyFUFUYaCa3gUAI= =HMYP -----END PGP SIGNATURE-----
