Searching for a new endo

I'm going to start searching for a new endo. Even though my current

one is treating me with BRT, she is still directing me to take

dosages based on my TSH. Fortunately, I have some refills left on my

meds so that gives me a little time to look.

Each time I have an appointment with her I'm all geared up to go in

and tell her that she shouldn't rely on TSH and a bunch of other

things, but I lose my nerve once I hit the door. I'm contemplating

writing her a letter to tell her these things but I'm afraid she'll

continue to treat me the same way and label me " difficult " or not

want to treat me anymore at all.

What are some things that one should ask when they are calling around

for new doctors? I'd feel much more comfortable if I knew a little

about how they treat GD. Especially since I will be taking the time

to convince my primary that I need a new endo and have gotten a

referral from him.

Thanks in advance for your suggestions,

in land

Age 31, Diagnosed with Graves and TED 10/2001

Treatment - BRT since 06/29/2002

Current dosages - 100mcg Synthroid once daily & 25mg PTU twice a day

I competely understand how you feel about approaching this.

One way is to go in there with a folder. That shows doctors you are

taking charge of your own body. If she feels threatened by it, it's

time to move on. If she seems positive about it, then without

degrading her, suggest about what you heard about T4, T3, etc. tests

and by golly you'd like to be tested for that too. If she's

threatened by it, such a crappy doctor anyway and then you'll be glad

you ran from her.

My first endo was appalled that I would " sooner listen to the author

of books (Elaine and Dr. Ahrem) then to him since he is my

doctor! " He got down right obnixious with me. I was so glad to now

have found a descend, caring endo.

Good Luck!

One thing that is helpful is to take Elaine's book with you. It's really silly,

but just having a book with you seems to send the message that you are really

searious about learning more about your condition. It also sends the message

that you are taking control of your treatment.

Yes, then if they are an ego-endo you can always use it to knock some sense

into them. . . . Just joking . . .
