Guest guest
Hi ! In answer to your " broad questions " I can only give you my opinion from our experiences with , but here goes. I've found that it's completely " normal " for a new treatment to work initially, and then be rejected. It has happened several times with B. It also doesn't help that we've changed therapists (in lieu of someone with " more " experience) and have had to go through the " getting to know him " phase all over again. B is affected by anything!! There are some days it feels like the sun must have risen in the wrong sector of the sky, because he'll just bulk for no reason at all!! B has never been termed an " eater " so I can't help you there. B changes his likes and dislikes very frequently. What works one day, might not work the next. He was eating yogurt really well at his mom's house, but wouldn't touch it here without gagging. He " loved " applesauce and blueberries for two feeding therapies, (got through therapy with no bulking at all!) and then he totally rejected it! He was actually eating Cheez-It crackers (albeit slowly - 1/2 a cracker took an hour!! LOL) and now he won't touch them. He has steadfastly refused to even try a " goldfish " cracker, and then, the other night at the ball game, he ate 3 of them!!! There is no rhyme or reason to B's eating. We put him in his high chair, and do feeding therapy (where we insist that he eat) twice a day, and then we have him sit with us at dinner, and give him tidbits of whatever we are having with no pressure to eat, so that he can have a positive experience with meal time. But B is 100% tube fed, so we don't have to worry that he isn't getting " enough " calorie-wise either. I still find all of it totally frustrating!! I have 4 kids, and another g-child, and I have NEVER had a child that wouldn't eat! I've dealt with differing degrees of pickiness, but they all ate, they all grew, they all thrived. In my head, I totally understand that B has no appetite, and no desire to put anything in his mouth, but in my heart it feels like I must be doing something wrong, or his appetite and eating would improve. When it comes to eating and B, the Serenity Prayer is my mantra! LOL As far as your friend goes, as a therapist, she must know that not all therapists and patients click, and that there are times when changes are necessary. It's not that you don't appreciate all that she's done, or that she hasn't done enough. It's not that you feel she is " lacking " in skill. It's NOT personal!! It has to do with what is " best " for Connor, and that is the angle I would try to approach her from. Hope this helps!
