Guest guest
I suffered from severe Graves disease and went untreated. During this time I had extremely irrational behavior and stole money from work. Is there anyone out there who can understand I was under the influence of the disease? I finally had a total thyroidectomy
Guest guest
Right before I found out I was HyperT/Graves, I had some really bad feelings towards my hubby who I invited immediately to get out of my house. I was so upset with him, he's lucky I did not get the gun and escort him out. The only reason I did not was because that very night, I became sick as a dog. Prolly lucky for both of us that I came down with a very nasty virus or I'd have been on the news for doing him in. Sandy > I suffered from severe Graves disease and went untreated. Guest guest
Sandy, Thanks for sharing. My husband wants validation that the graves disease can effect a person enough to committ a crime. It's been a living hell. Noone seems to understand the insanity of being controlled by the graves. This question got me thinking. " Under the influence " is an interesting description. When I'm hyper, I'm definitely more interested in taking risks that are dangerous or illegal. But I know full well if I do take a risk. It's not as if I were drunk and unaware. The best example for me is that I'm much more tempted to run a red light, pass some idiot even though there's a double line and a blind curve ahead--or even take a swing at my boyfriend if he calls me a bitch often enough in one fight. But I sure know it if I give in and do one of these things. Of course, this group has only emphasized to me that everyone is different and has a different experience with Graves'. What bothers me about being too understanding, though, is that we don't excuse people for things they do while drunk--cause an auto accident drunk and you may still go to jail. Nonetheless, going through this does make you emphathize with poor Dr. Jekyll. Best wishes,

Yes, but one of the key things about our lack of sympathy to excusing things done under the influence of alcohol is that the drunk was sober when he/she took that first drink. Graves (and other potentially " psycho-active " medical conditions) don't work that way. I think the key point in a legal context would be whether you understood what you were doing when you did it, and understood that it was wrong. -Jill
