Guest guest
has scoliosis and kyphosis. His orthopedic doctor seems to know a lot about RSS, but he says he could not find any literature that associates kyphosis with RSS. Scoliosis is associated with RSS. is at the point where he needs to wear a back brace now for the kyphosis, as his curve keeps progressing at every visit. His kyphosis is at 65 degrees now. The scoliosis has remained stable between 20 and 23 degrees. The doctor says because he can't find any literature linking kyphosis with RSS, he doesn't know if he will even respond to the brace. In addition, he says his kyphosis is the rigid type, which also is less likely to respond to bracing. , of course, doesn't want to wear a brace, and I don't blame him. He will have to wear it for 21 hours per day and he will not be able to participate in sports fully. A brace will not correct the curve, only prevent it (possibly in his case) from getting worse. If it works, he will have to wear it until he stops growing, which is a long time! The doctor suggested the growth hormone might be contributing to this, and that we should talk with the endocrinologist about continuing growth hormone. Interestingly enough, in the past 6 months on GH, hasn't grown at all, but his kyphosis got worse by 10 degrees. Does anyone else have a child who wears a brace or has had back surgery for kyphosis? I would be grateful for any information I could get! Kim C.
Guest guest
Kim, I remember years ago that Dr. H. said that kyphosis is a part of RSS. There have been at least two girls that I can think of who have had this to the degree that intervention was necessary. Max has a little bit of it, but not enough to do anything. Most don't even notice it or think it is because he is not standing up straight. Jodi Z
Guest guest
Hi Kim, Our doctors haven't been too concerned about Charissa's kyphosis, but our chiropractor was. He tried some traction therapy for a few weeks (she was in a harness, upright, walking on a treadmill for part of it....) along with some exercises using a balance board. It really seemed to help to " retrain " her muscles for posture. After the traction therapy was complete she was supposed to keep using the balance board every day, but when she quit doing the balance board exercises regularly it got worse again. in Alaska < Kyphosis has scoliosis and kyphosis.
