Guest guest
I joined this group shortly after being diagnosed just last Monday (already seems like ages ago!) and have been reading all the e- mails. You all are so great and informative, I'm really glad I found this place. I'm pregnant with my fifth child (due Nov. 30) and have had a difficult pregnancy already~ far worse than any of my others. I've had a very difficult time since the birth of my FIRST child with heart palpitations, excessive weight loss, sensitivity to heat, etc...but the doctor's always diagnosed me with postpartum anxiety. I now believe I've had this for years, but since I've been on propranolol (with the exception of during pregnancy) since after my first was born, I've just masked some of the symptoms. I went to my regular OB appt. last Monday, and since my blood pressure was high, my pulse was 110, and due to the fact that I've been hospitalized three times for excessive vomiting~ my OB finally checked my thyroid. Four days later I finally started medication. I'm relieved but also so scared of what this will do to my baby. I'm on propranolol (10 mgs/3 x's a day~ but my heart is still racing!) and PTU (2-50 mgs tablets/3 x's a day). I haven't been able to gain any weight yet, and I started out underweight. This has been so hard on me and my family as I have 4 children ages 6 and under already...and I've always been extremely active with them. My husband has been having to take on a lot more responsibility as well as I've been bedridden for a couple of weeks (been feeling a tiny bit better these past 2 days). If anyone has experience with Grave's during pregnancy, I would love to hear your story! I also have Crohn's disease (I'm a mess, aren't I?!) but have been in remission for 9 yrs~ although the past few weeks I've had some gastrointestinal problems (could it be from the Grave's?). I'm sure I'll be asking LOTS of questions in the weeks to come, hope you all don't mind! Take care, Christi
Guest guest
Hi Christi. You'll be hearing from other members who've been through this successfully.. IIRC there's I who also has 5. (I remember those days with 4 under 6 but I only developed GD after the birth of my last child.) The good news is that as your pregnancy progresses the GD should abate so you'll be able to reduce your dose. It used to be that women who had GD while pregnant would have thyroidectomies. That, in fact, was in the book my ex-endo #2 gave me, so of course I thought that was standard operating procedure. It's not and there's good reason to want to save your thyroid and be on ATDs. Guest guest
Hi Christi, PTU is safe during pregnancy, there have been many people that have had healthy babies while on it. Sometimes your thyroid levels get better starting the second trimester...mine have. I am due Nov.12 with my 7th. I was able to stop the ptu when only a few weeks pregnant,I was on 50mg 2x a day,but there are others in this group that were on much higher doses than you. Have you tried the chemo drug for nausea, " Zofran " ? Works really well for many people with severe preg. sickness. I tried it this time and it worked well during the day, at night I still threw up. One problem though,,,they are $26 a pill!! luckily our insurance paid for 1/2,but some don't. Perhaps you have already had several IV's of this:-). Anyway, wanted to let you know you are not alone,I for one am with you. Guest guest
Hi Christi, Welcome to the group. I'm beginning my eighth month of pregnancy with my first child. Before the pregnancy, I was on a massive dose of PTU. My thyroid quickly improved in the first trimester and I was able to drop my PTU considerably. Unlike some of the other moms in this group, I haven't been able to get off PTU completely. I'm down to 50 mg twice/day and my thyroid levels are just above the normal range. My heart was also racing, even while using beta blockers, so my doctor told me I could gradually increase the dosage until my heart rate went down, making sure I allowed 2 weeks between increases to give the body a chance to adjust. I don't recommend that you do this on your own without discussing it with your doctor first. Once my thyroid cooled down, I was able to cut back on the beta blocker as well. I had heard that Graves' generally improves in pregnancy, but I wasn't prepared for how quickly my thyroid levels dropped. It was as though my thyroid slammed on the brakes the moment of conception! Be sure that your doctor monitors you frequently (every 4 weeks or so), especially in the first trimester. Otherwise, you risk going hypo and that could be dangerous to the baby. Also, I had a tough time finding an iodine-free prenatal vitamin. Precare is the only one my doctor & pharmacist were able find. The digestive problems can definitely be caused by Graves. Guest guest
Cristi, I had a third child after my Graves diagnosis. My situation is a little different, because I have both Hashis (hypothyroidism) and Graves (hyper). AFter weaning my second child, I went into remission from Graves, without conventional tx, and within ayear because hypo. I took armour. After becoming pregnant, I took armour throughout my pregnancy. My graves did NOT return. Other posts that have mentioned your illness may indeed improve throughout pg. are correct. I too would opt for medication during preganncy. As Faye noted, there are many many reasons to keep one's thyroid!!!! Now I'm three months post partum and had to decrease my armour to a fraction of it's normal amount, which means my thyroid is revving up. I'm not hyper yet, but if that should happen I would wean my baby and see if the end ot lactation/pregnancy hormones helped my condition. After this baby, think about giving your body a bit of a break from pregnancy and childbirth and lactation for a couple of years -- purely for health reasons. I waited three years between children and during that time, my health completely restablized. I think perhaps the hormonal influx of preg/lactation takes an impact on those of us who have children close together or lots of children. Take care, B New here~ pregnant and just diagnosed.. Guest guest
Thanks, Fay. Things are going so well that I may be able to have my baby at a birth center rather than a hospital. I find out today if the midwives get approval for me to birth there. This is something I've wanted so much and thought it wasn't an option, so I'm very excited by the possibility. Keep your fingers crossed for me! Peace, Tori In a message dated 5/14/2003 11:57:26 AM Pacific Daylight Time, cfyoung2@... writes: > Wonderful news! I didn't realize that things had settled down. Guest guest
Tori - That's GREAT news! I know how much you want to do this! One of my good friends has had a midwife for 3 or her 4 (the midwife didn't make it in time for #4!) and it was a great experience. Hope it works out and wishing you have an easy delivery! Can't wait to hear about the birth! Re: New here~ pregnant and just diagnosed.. > Thanks, Fay. Things are going so well that I may be able to have my baby at > a birth center rather than a hospital. Of course the main thing is (cliche alert, though like most cliche true) it doesn't matter how they get into our lives, but that they're there. take care, Fay ________________________________________________________________ The best thing to hit the internet in years - Juno SpeedBand! I'm hoping to get an answer tomorrow. Otherwise, the anticipation could make my blood pressure go up and I won't be able to birth out of hospital! While I agree with you that the main thing is having a safe, healthy baby, I really do think that it matters how they get into our lives. I think birth can be a profoundly empowering experience that brings couples closer and strengthens their confidence in their inherent ability to parent their child. An unfullfilling birth experience can undermine that confidence. I think women should be in control of the birth and not made to feel like helpless bystanders, whether they choose to birth in a hospital, birth center, or at home. Let me amend this: no matter the circumstances from the pushing on was definitely sublime. I agree that a positive experience is empowering but don't get caught up in negative thoughts about a less than positive experience. OK. hope this isn't getting too OT, we can move this elsewhere, but the day I had my last baby was the funeral of a close relative of the head of the practice. All the drs. were there but one, and you can imagine how frazzled he was. I had the presence of mind to be understanding (not to mention the confidence of having done this and raised other kids before ;-) and really didn't let it get to me. I would like to think that had this been my first or second I would still have had the same understanding perspective. Guest guest
Tori, I am thrilled to hear you may get to have the birth you are hoping for with your baby! I started out at a birth center with midwives for mine (several years ago, before Graves) and they suggested a home birth. After looking into it, I went with that option, and labored at home. The midwives are very conservative, and at the first sign there might be a problem, they trasfer. I ended up having to transfer, and in the end had a C-section. Having both extremes of low-tech, low-interference, and high-tech, high-interference, I can't begin to express how wonderful midwives are! I'm so happy for you! == in Fla.
