Hi Tori-

They just came out with storing cord blood after I had my 1st son. So we

missed out on it then.

My husband and I discussed storing it this time and decided against it. I

would have still liked to have donated it but things happened so fast that I

didn't get a chance to tell the doctor.

The reason that we decided not to do it was because stem cells either don't

have antigens displayed on their surface (that's what causes a rejection) or

they don't have many (can't remember which) so there's not much that much of

an immune response to them no matter where you get them. On the flip side,

if you store your own baby's cord blood, it will always be immediately

available if the baby needs it. There would be no wait involved.

Anyhow, personally, I think there is something to this stem cell stuff.

Take care,

Tori,

You might look into donating it. You can't do it in all areas, though,

and some places only do it for women who give birth during business

hours (!) I had wanted to do that, but the person who does the

collection was on vacation when I gave birth.

If you decide to bank it, check around. The prices vary quite a bit.

Hi Vic,

I wouldn't bother with saving the cord cells. If you ever had a need for stem

cells and there was an available technology that made the cells useful, you

would still have other stem cells sources like bone marrow. Stem cells can

also sometimes be found in the fetal circulation.

We were saving cord bloods, with maternal permission, for a research project,

but the funding fell through so we're not even doing active research. Best,

Elaine

Thanks, Elaine and everyone else who chimed in on this one. I think I'll

call around and see about donating the cord blood.

Peace,

Tori
