Guest guest
Hi Luci and Aldyth, Luci, are you on an ATD? I've been on PTU since Sept. I have the impression that ATDs suppress the immune system somewhat and make us more vulnerable to colds etc. I also had extremely swollen glands and a continual sore throat for my first three months of treatment (yeah I was in for CBCs every week). My endo thought this was unusual and tested me for everything from Lyme disease to mono, all negative. At eight months the situation's better but my glands stay pretty swollen. I think it's the Graves' itself. Best wishes, B.
Guest guest
Luci, My track record was that when over dosed on my PTU and hypo, I picked up every bug, but mildly at least. When hyper or euthyroid ,I never get sick, no matter how exposed I am. When hpyo the body is too busy just surviving and has nothing left to fight an invader. Plus with all systems going too slow, the return to health is slowed while fighting any bug/ infection. As simple as a scratch or as complex as a cold or sore throat. -Pam L - 3 1/2 years Graves', TED, and PTU. Remission due to SLOW reduction of PTU (despite an incompetent endo ! ), improved lifestyle, excellent nutrition, herbs, and looking at the big picture. Pills alone only help the symptoms. We must help our bodies to heal.
Guest guest
, Yes, ATDs slightly surpressed the immune system. That is a good thing since in Graves' our immune system is in over drive. BUT too much surpression results in hypo AND inability to fight infection. The proper dose of ATDs does NOT cause too much surpression, thus we are NOT more vulnerable to colds etc. Since Graves' I have never caught any of the colds and flu's. I even found I am the best qualified to care for sick friends, since I do have this one bonus with Graves'. I don't get it, and my chicken soup recipe gets better every year with all this extra experience ! When hypo I did get sore throats, but I then learned to get labs and lower my dose. It became one more sign of hypo for ME, and I was able to stop things before they got worse. Dang... that was hard for me to phrase. Sorry it sounds awkward , but I am striving to help you see the logic. -Pam L -
