OT--meds for ADHD

I'd be curious, too, to hear what others take for their ADHD. I did really well

with a small dose of Ritalin (10 mg?) but my GP was very uncomfortable

prescribing it. And now it seems that having Graves' rules out stimulants

(haven't entirely given up coffee, though).

I switched to a holistic approach, gingko biloba for short-term recall (I

stopped it recently as it's a blood thinner and I think the PTU is too, but it

had a lasting effect). The other aspect is to treat it as an allergy, with

antioxidants and a good mineral supplement. The antioxidant I saw recommended

was pycnogenol, a patented pine bark extract. The minerals probably should be

balanced for Graves'.

ADHD as a concept answered lots of my questions about myself, though more

recently the onset of Graves' complicated things. I'd love to focus better, but

worry about adding another med into the mix. (Pam L. warns of hypo-T and ADHD--I

agree it's a rough combination, had that last fall. Hyper-T increases my

impulsivity and emotional lability, so that's bad, too.)

BTW, thanks, Pam, for your warning about what loss of taste can mean, we're so

attuned to watch for possible side effects of ATDs that I would have blamed the

PTU rather than depression for sure. As far as taking Synthroid, I take a small

dose, for block and replace, first thing in the morning and have found it really

easy to take and gentle on my system. Big contrast with the osteoporosis meds,

too (luckily that's only once a week).

Best wishes,
