Autoimmune disease news The Autoimmune Disease Research Foundation (ADRF) hosts a website, which describes and supports the autoimmune disease " common cause " hypothesis, recognizing that many autoimmune diseases have a common cause and possibly a common cure. More information can be found at www.cureautoimmunity.org, or by calling " Autoimmune disease should be regarded as one disease that is manifested as many other diseases, " says Larry Raff, ADRF's president and CEO. Autoimmune disease occurs when the body's own immune system attacks its own tissue thinking it is a foreign threat. In the case of type I diabetes, the immune system destroys insulin- producing beta cells. In lupus the immune system destroys connective tissue. In Multiple Sclerosis nerve covering is destroyed. Autoimmune diseases typically run in families. ADRF - an alliance of volunteers, physicians and scientists - believes current research data indicates that the rapid pace of biomedical research has rendered the traditional " disease-centric " approach of philanthropies an increasingly inappropriate structure toward finding cures for these common autoimmune afflictions. ADRF's philosophy is that autoimmune disease should be regarded as one disease that is manifested as many other diseases. The website describes the ADRF's efforts to support novel, high-impact research and clinical trials that will hasten a cure for many autoimmune diseases. Well-known diseases like type I diabetes, Crohn's disease, rheumatoid arthritis, scleroderma, multiple sclerosis, Addison's disease, Graves disease, and lupus are some of the 80 autoimmune diseases that strike 50 million Americans of all ages and backgrounds.
