Guest guest
Until I can get a copy of the article on Periactin from Magic, can anyone tell me its success rate in infants....also, does anyone know how long it take to work? My 7 mo. old was just given a prescription for it and I tried it for the first time today...she seemed extra tired all day and not hungry at all. Guest guest
Sheryl, Did you give her the whole dose the first time? There is a definite protocol for giving Periactin and it has been refined over the years. In essence, this is what it is: The first week, you give half the dose only at night, half an hour to an hour before the evening meal/bottle. If that is well tolerated after a week, then you go up to the full dose. Sometimes, however, it is necessary to go to 3/4 of the dose that week and then the following week, you go up to the full dose. Once the evening dose is tolerated, then you start the same with the morning dose. I am surprised, however, that your doctor has you giving it to a 7 month old. That seems young to me, but perhaps things have changed over the years. I remember Max taking it at 13 months and he was walking around like a drunken soldier. We were told that he was too young for it. We waited and tried it again when Dr. H. told us to, but I don't remember the age. Meanwhile, if your doctor thinks it is okay, then try the method I wrote out above. You will not see dramatic results in the beginning, but over time you will. And there have been people who have reported that they did not see an increase, but found that when they took their child to the doctor, the child had gained weight. Remember, 10 extra calories here, 20 there, 15 here, etc. can all add up. They are that many more than she was taking in before. Jodi Z. Guest guest
Charlene, Generally they get periactin in two doses, one before breakfast and one before dinner. As for how long before mealtime, that is a bit of trial and error. For , 45 minutes seems to work really well. For most children, it is anywhere from 30 minutes to 1 hour. You need to experiment for yourself. Judith, Steve, (RSS) and (non RSS) 4 1/2 year old twins back to school today
Guest guest
Thanks all for the info. My Dr. rec. starting with 1.25ml 3X/day and working up to 3ml 3X/day - does this sound like an o.k. dose or should I still break it down to a smaller amount? Thanks for the advice - Jane, mom to
