Guest guest
-Hello I understand they are good for us to eat. I have graves and do not eat iodine and reduced my salt intake also and am in remission after 6 month. Check out the database here and the files for more info. I am not a doctor or expert though. Guest guest
Hi I think your confusion is justified. Take a look at this link: http://www.ithyroid.com/goitrogens.htm Different people have different ideas as to what to eat and not. I think we strive for balance, and moderation. Use common sense, what seems right to you. Variety. I for one could not eat broccoli every day! And I don't think I necessarily should. I am aiming to improve my nutrition, by eating more lean protein (primarily chicken, as I don't eat red meat), fresh fruit, and vegetables (still working on getting in the veggies). Anyway, I do believe it is not good to have an excess of iodine, but I don't think a little here and there will be bad for me (I currently have a mild case of Graves'), so I'll have cheese and other dairy. I cut out iodized salt (when I cook), am eating out less, and am avoiding seafood (though I guess I will have some on occasion if I really want it). I am also abstaining from alcohol (which is not hard for me as I am a lightweight and drank little anyway), given the meds. Oh, and I don't drink coffee or caffeinated drinks anymore (quit coffee when I was hyper and haven't gone back), and don't use artificial sweeteners (aspartame is supposedly especially bad, tho I used saccharin). Everyone's different, and so what works for some may not work for others. If you want more info, you can find it on the Net, and also can get Elaine 's book Graves' Disease: A Practical Guide if you haven't already. Guest guest
Hi When you're hyperthryoid, goitrogens are great. They work like ATDs in that they block iodine absorption and this reduces the amount of thyroid hormone your body can make. If you happen to become hypothryoid, you wouldn't want to eat too many, but most naturopaths recommend eating 1.5 cups of goitrogens daily to help reduce hyperthryoidism. Take care, Elaine
