<My son is on a 10 day course of vancomycin for his clostridia problem. He

started the medication on Saturday and today we are seeing a lot of

diarrhea. Has anyone else had a similar reaction to vancomycin?>

,

I've had to take vanco personally and had a bout of diarrhea. My doc

said that it's a perfectly normal reaction because it kills the " gut flora "

that permits proper digestion. He suggested cultured foods, yogurt,

buttermilk, cheese, etc. Unfortunately, your son can have none of these on

the cfgf diet. It seems like just about all asd kids have problems with

either constipation or loose stools. Does your son usually have one of

these? Either way, it should return to " normal " (whatever's normal for your

son) soon after the vanco is done.

might I ask why the doctor perscribed such a strong antibiotic ? Yes any

antibiotic can cause loose bowels,.because it can kill off the good bacteria

leading to an over growth of things like yeast. If the loose stools continue

I wouldask the doc for a different med. Good luck F
