Hi AJ.

I really can't help you as far as the scan goes. My inclination is not to

fool around if there is any reason to suspect more than harmless nodules

BUT I have no experience with nodules and would still wonder if

ultrasound wouldn't be as if not more helpful.

However...

>only 2 weeks on 100 mg 2X's daily PTU .

PTU must be taken THREE times a day. I added splitting PTU to your

subject header to attract the attention of PTU splitters here for best

recommendations.

Of course it does, and if you're eating healthily I don't see why at the

very least a medical professional wouldn't encourage you to continue.

Take care, a fellow Michigander (or is Michigoose for the ladies), Fay

Hi Alice.

One of the reasons I'm glad you made it here is because a. I have no

experience with PTU and b. I have a handle on the basics but not on the

more complicated things that arise - you have a panel of experts here!

As far as how low it'll go, I don't know but it's likely that even if

it's a dramatic drop it won't go that low yet. You will just about

definitely be in for a dose reduction. It's always best to reduce

gradually, but if you do have such a positive and dramatic reaction to

the PTU the first reduction might be a bit larger than the recommended 50

mg.

Now this discussion about going to 600 mg - is this with the endo who

recommends PTU 3x a day? If it is, then as optimistic as I felt about

your finding someone halfway decent, it may be canceled out by

recommending going up to 600. That's really absurd. 600 is an unusually

high dose. 300 is more common with some people going up to 450.

Does the dr. who recommends 600 do so because the TSH isn't moving? I can

dig up a study that explains why TSH doesn't necessarily move and is just

about irrelevant in the treatment of hyperthyroidism. The only good thing

about the dose of 600 is that it's easily divisible by 3.

take care, Fay

Hi Fay,

The Free T4 was 2.3 a week ago....after 2 weeks on 100 mg PTU 2

times a day. The month before it the Free T4 was 3.36. It dropped a

whole point on 2 weeks of med!!!!! Normal is .8 to 1.8. I feel great

hyper...I don't want to see hypo.

I've already been another week on the PTU...and have gained 8

pounds in the past week. True, I've eaten lots of sugar goodies this

week. Tomorrow I'll go back on no sugar, no salt and lots of

broccoli...etc. I walk 3 miles a day, and have begun situps,

pushups, and dumbbells for arms. I don't want this weight to weight

me down.

I've posted to Elaine too. My endo is on vacation til I see her

in 3 more weeks.

I knew the TSH will be surpressed a long time.

The suggestion to increase my meds was before the bloodwork...by

an endo I saw for a 2nd opinion. She was just going on the most

common starting dose when she talked of my taking 300 to 00 a day.

After the blood results there was no more talk of increasing the

dose.

It seems my endo made a good call on this dose. In my opinion

it is lowering hormone quickly.

Nite Fay. I'm dreaming of the yellow brick road to remission.

I have been told by 2 endos that it is unlikely. Does anyone know

the way?

Ever hopeful,

Al
