Guest guest
, Sorry I am asking you this questions, but I know that we also live in California. Gaby is 22 months and has a one and one teacher. She use to have an OT and PT, but they took it aways in June and they will be taking her one on one teacher in December 2004. She is doing so well that, they say she does need them. My questions is what do I do for preschool, our district does not have preschool, there are only private preschool in our area. do they also have to meet her needs for size, with the 504 plan. I have seen you talk about a shadow, what is this and when and how do they get one? her teacher says that she needs to go into mainstream school and not special ed, since mentally she is find. Gaby does not have a feeding tube. Sorry for all the quetios. Guest guest
Stella - It sounds like congratulations are in order!!! Your daughter has improved so much with OT and PT that she no longer needs or qualifies for it. On the positive side, that is great!!! Yes, you are correct. In California, we only have private preschools, although there are Headstart programs in some areas. You will need to investigate preschools (there are parent coop ones that can be less expensive) -- or you may decide not to put her in preschool at all. If you decide on sending her to preschool, yes, legally they would be required to meet any of her needs, such as keeping her safe, providing size appropriate furniture (although in preschool this is usually not a problem as the children usually vary age 2-5). Also, they would be required to work with you for snacks, etc. The 504 is implemented in the school district, so you would have to contact your school district to find out if the preschools would use this as well. We didn't go that route at that age with -- we just met with 3 or 4 preschools, told them what we needed, and chose the school that seemed to be OK and most willing to work with us and with . It sounds like your daughter doesn't need a shadow or anything like that ... she is bright and able to manage the classroom work of her same-age peers. She doesn't have physical problems such as blindness or being in a wheelchair, that would present a need for a " shadow " or one-one-one need. And it sounds like she doesn't have the autism, or severe ADHD, that might require a " shadow/one-on-one " either. She sounds like a normal child who happens to be small. Is that correct? You should contact MAGIC and ask for document H-67 Handouts from " School Accomodations for a Child of Short Stature " -- 2003 MAGIC Convention. This should have a lot of answers for you. Hope this helps. And congratulations on such great improvement for your daughter! > , > Sorry I am asking you this questions, but I know that we also > live in California.
