Guest guest
Hi , I started PTU in Sept. and by Jan. was down to 100 mg./day and still hypo. My endo is a great doctor although clearly has patchy knowledge of Graves'. At first she pooh-poohed the efficacy of the Japanese B & R studies (actually said the dietary differences between cultures meant they didn't apply here) but came around and started me on the Synthroid (50mcg/day) in early May because she feels that less than 100 mg/day of PTU is ineffective (I know there are people on the board who would dispute that). The Synthroid is thus intended to keep me euthyroid on 100 mg/day of PTU. The endo announced she wants to start tapering the PTU in Oct. I was stunned at no mention of a TSI test (she did only a general antibody test of some kind when I was first diagnosed) but I plan to ask for it before any tapering happens! Best wishes, B. I am inclined to believe that PTU 50mg/day is effective, but being new to this game, I will learn more (at least about what is effective for me). Though I'm not sure if it has enough of an immunosuppressive effect at that dose, which is my concern (hence the idea of B & R if my antibodies aren't decreasing). I am currently taking 50mg/day, and will get labs in 2 weeks (I don't know where I'm at, as I may feel OK at either end of the normal range, with subtle differences). Stick to your guns with the antibody tests! >The endo announced she wants to start tapering the PTU in Oct.
