Guest guest
Dr. H put on Nexium when we saw her in Chicago in case he had reflux in hopes he would do better eating, etc. did have reflux when he was a baby (he is almost 11 now) and was on many meds, but he hasn't been on them since he was about 2 years old. He had a fundoplication when he got his g-tube (still has this) at age 6 months. It has been a long time since has had an Upper GI or any other test that would identify whether he continues to have reflux. When I ask him if he has pain or any of the signs associated with reflux, he tells me he doesn't know. Then, after being on the medicine, I asked him if he felt any different. He said he didn't really know. Since reflux is not something I can see, he doesn't really complain, & he is on a ton of medications as it is, I took him off the Nexium. I am not sure if I did the right thing. Anyone else ever had a similar situation? On another note, does anyone know what the current wait time is to get an appointment with Dr. H? Kim C. Guest guest
Kim, I would vote for leaving him on the meds, for awhile. My son Matt is younger than your son (7 years) and he NEVER complained of stomach pain. Until he had been on the medicine for awhile. My theory is he grew up with the burning pain and didn't know any different. He didn't know he could feel better until we started him on prilosec. Your son is older and a much better 'historian' and can tell you, but he may be surprised at how well he feels. Is his dosage correct? Matt is on an adult size dose of prilosec, which I know is common with our kids. Just my thoughts. Guest guest
I agree with Beth, and can give you another perspective. too had severe reflux as an infant (and very visible on the upper GI). We stopped meds around 9-10 months old when she seemed old enough (we did NOT know about RSS at that time). So around 5 she began Zantac after Dr. Harbison put her on PEriactin. Long story short, had NEVER complained about stomach pain or anything. She talked about being full alot. But no pain. However, when we stopped Zantac for about 2 months, her weight DROPPED!!!! That was the only sign that there was something going on. Even at 7 yrs old, she couldn't describe pain to us. But clearly, when her weight dropped, it gave us an idea. So we redid some basic GI tests (which actually do not rule out reflux, but if reflux shows up on it, it tells you) and we found out that her reflux is still very bad. She has NEVER complained. Same with ear infections. So.... I would stay on the med for a month or two and watch his weight. If his weight velocity improves, you might have an answer. Guest guest
Hi We started Liam on zantac about 5 weeks ago for possible reflux, he has put on 400gms in that time. We didnt think we could see any significant change, he has never complained of pain and his bolus feed have gone from 100 to 120mls, just shows how that little extra can add to weight. We have stopped his zantac as of yesterday so his ENT can see any signs of reflux next week when she puts more ear tubes in, ? an endoscope. last night he vommited x 2 overnight. I think the results speak for themselves, I just wish our GI specialist would listen. Guest guest
To Beth & , Thanks for your input. You convinced me to try again on the Nexium. This time I'll try to pay closer attention to his eating, weight gain, etc. Actually, his eating right now is very minimal (not like it was maximal before - lol). You are right - I agree he has a higher tolerance to pain & maybe if he does have reflux, this feels normal to him. Part of me just hates the fact that he is on so many medicines, especially when I am not sure whether they are doing anything for him.
