Guest guest
Good Luck! I will never forget my anxiety over collecting the first morning urine from my 3 yr. old son. I paced the hall for an hour, not wanting to wake him up, but needing to catch him immediately after waking. I finally just woke him up and brought him straight to the bathroom. I had him sit on the toilet while I held the collection cup under him. It was miserable, but he did it, after much fighting. I tried to read to him, but he was so tired and upset, that failed miserably (not to mention the fact he was afraid he'd fall in the toilet, so I had to hold him too). It would've been nice to have been able to give him some juice or something to drink while we waited for him to go, to take his mind off of it, but he had to have an empty stomach for the other tests they were doing that day. I did promise him a treat on the way home from the Drs. OT: testing > Hi all. We are FINALLY going for testing for my son's > ION profile (amino acids, EFAs,etc), IgG. Guest guest
Caroline: We went through this a couple of weeks ago with our little guy. For us, the urine collection went amazingly easily. We had the collection bag (fm Great Plains Lab) and put it on him when we put him down the night before. Totally expected him to rip it off, but he didn't, and we had a good sample the next morning. For the blood draw, friends suggested we get some EMLA cream. It's a by-prescription topical anesthetic. We applied to both wrists, and the inside of both elbows, abt an hour before the procedure. There's not much pain anyway, but this helps them get past the needle stick. For all the tests our doc ordered, it took abt eight vials. I sat and held him (TIGHTLY) thoughout, but he was a trooper. Hope this helps... Joe Gallant 's dad (3.1, ASD) > Hi all. We are FINALLY going for testing for my son's > ION profile (amino acids, EFAs,etc), IgG. Guest guest
what is this testing and how do i get it done?? crystal OT: testing > Hi all. Guest guest
>Can you " veterans " give me some advice on HOW TO GET a > first morning urine sample (BAG PROVIDED) on a STRONG > willed 3 yr old. With great difficulty ;-) Mine will not pee anywhere else but in a diaper if there is anybody in the room with him. If there isn't anybody with him the carpet is in need of another shampoo. The first time we had to get a sample (he has awoken dry for over 2 years) I stripped him and followed him round with a pot. At about six in the evening he finally cut loose and I caught some of it in the pot. But was it then a first morning urine or a 20 hour collection? Tape on bags - not this kid as his fine motor skills are more than adequate to deal with that. The bright side is that we are now using the keep him naked approach to toilet training and are finally getting results. And I minimize testing as much as possible which I also think is a good thing. > There is a 'restraining' system to get the blood work > (which he will need), he goes balistic with just going > to the doc much less blood work... I am trying not to > get real worked up myself. When mine was 3 weeks old and still weighed less than 10 pounds he caught a stomach bug that put him in a raging fever. He has to have a lumbar puncture and my husband had to hold him through it. This spring he had an undiagnosed sinus infection that suddenly spiked a temp and sent him into febrile convulsions. We have decided that anything not needed we will avoid and anything needed we will be there and do whatever is needed. I live in a rural area, which has pluses and minuses. One of the good things is that a little hospital where I once did some work is great about blood draws. I call and warn them and find out when their best blood techs are there and when it is quiet. I go in on my own if possible in advance to fill out paperwork if needed so I can minimize waits. I book appointments way in advance so I can get the first appointment of the day and time my arrival carefully. If he really reacts badly to an office (or they keep me waiting long without valid reason) I change offices and at a new place make sure I have several innocuous visits to get him used to it all with a big treat afterwards regardless of his behavior. Then I hold him, using westling holds as needed, and they have been able to get up to 7 vials with one puncture. As soon as it is over I wave his swimsuit (in summer) or a Mcs bag (in winter) in front of him. No need to 'board' him with restraints yet even though he is strong ang very strong willed. And at this point thanks to early teaching in physical skills I have only had one black eye. Gradually it gets easier. Good luck. jan
Guest guest
Caroline, when we did my son testing, the eldest twin, we first got a prescription for emla creme to use as a numbing effect on his arm where the blood would be drawn. We also took him 45 minutes away to the children's hospital and found an oncologist (spelling?) nurse who is accustomed to needles and children. They evidently work on children having chemo. It was still an ordeal but worth the results. With the urine collection, we would wake Triston up about an hour and a half before his normal wake up time, put the bag on him and then keep him up, usually rocking in this glider and vegging out on PBSkids. We usually got the sample within an hour and I would check him every couple of minutes. We tried letting him go back to sleep once, but the bag just leaked out in soaked into his diaper. If you kind of tear a hole in the center of the diaper, you can kind of have more space for the bag and it will not leak out as easy. When we send off both stool and urine, we always get the stool first, then the urine the next morning. Donna in Kingwood, TX
