Guest guest
Rose, There are always choices you have to make, food-wise. The most important thing is to reduce iodine in the diet, as it exacerbates Graves. Not using iodized salt is a good beginning; watching your intake of other high-iodine foods is also a help. Your body needs some--150 mcg. a day I think is the figure--and you get that pretty easily just eating normally. The farmers, when they milk the cows, use an iodine wash on the udders--so I'm told--and that can increase iodine in the milk products. Personally I eat yogurt daily, cheese frequently, and use milk and cream in cooking. I think there are things that are worse triggers, and if you look at a list of iodine-rich foods (do a google search you'll find it), you'll be surprised how many are. Asparagus for example. So we all make some choices, and for me, eating natural, organic food whenever possible (including meats & dairy as well as veggies), limiting somewhat (but not by any means altogether) seafood that is known to be high in iodine, and just avoiding processed foods, is the choice I make. When I go to the store I rarely buy anything in a package, and if I do I read ingredient lists--the things I avoid most avidly are hydrogenated shortening, any product with soy, anything with high-fructose corn syrup, any artificial colorings, flavorings or sweeteners, and seaweed products. For me, this works. But we're all different, for instance I think I haven't had a soda since about 1964. Asparagus for example. Some of these foods are goitrogens and I think someone (Elaine M. and others possibly) have said that the goitrogenic effect of these foods outweigh the possible negatives. Also, many multivitamins will have 150 mcg. of iodine so we need to avoid a multi with iodine. >. But we're all different, for instance I think I > haven't > had a soda since about 1964. But then again, Terry, you have your cooking to look forward to.
